The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team fought back from a 21-point deficit against Medaille College but could not pull off the comeback, suffering a 67-55 loss on Saturday afternoon in Buffalo, NY.
Senior co-captain Katie Edgerton led the Saints (3-4) with 20 points, 15 of which came in the second half. Joining Edgerton in double-figures was sophomore Cassie St. Hilaire with 11 points, while senior Iris Santoni added seven points. First-year student Maddy Wetterhahn had a team-high 10 rebounds and six points, and classmate Allison Cady also added six points. Joelle Pollak's 24 points led three in double-figures for the Mavericks (4-3). Tanisha Travis recorded 16 points, 14 rebounds and six steals.
Medaille, which held a 38-21 advantage at the half, had its largest lead of the game at 44-23, four minutes into the second half. Edgerton, however, fueled a Saint comeback as she was 5-for-7 from the floor in the second stanza, including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.
The Saints outscored the Mavericks 27-16 over the ensuing 12:00 minute stretch. Back-to-back three pointers from Edgerton and Cady cut the deficit to seven points at 60-53 with 2:05 remaining. That would be the closest that St. Lawrence would come, however, as Medaille hit 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to seal the 67-55 win.
St. Lawrence finished 20-of-67 (29.9%) from the floor and outscored the home team 34-29 in the second half. Edgerton and St. Hilaire combined for seven of the team's 10 three-pointers.
Medaille, which made 22-of-48 (45.8%) from the floor, owned a 24-10 advantage on points scored in the paint.
St. Lawrence has concluded its 2011 schedule and will resume play on January 3rd when it hosts Potsdam State. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
