A goal just 12 seconds into overtime stunned the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team who fell to visiting Colgate 4-3 on Friday night in Cheel Arena.

Clarkson falls to 14-3-2 overall and 2-3-2 in ECAC Hockey games this season while Colgate improves to 9-3-5 overall and 1-1-4 in the league.

"Tonight was a pretty frustrating game for us," stated Head Coach Matt Desrosiers. "It was great to see us battle back after being behind, but we can't put ourselves in those situations to begin with. We started the game off well gaining the moment but gave that away by taking a penalty and giving up the first goal. Something we focused on and spoke about a lot before the game and this week in practice was limiting our turnovers but Colgate was able to capitalize on three of our turnovers tonight. Our special teams also need to be better as well. Right before the game I spoke about how down the stretch specialty teams are going to be what makes the difference in games and we saw that tonight. We had a couple power plays at opportune times but weren't able to capitalize on any and we gave up a couple goals on the penalty kill. The coaching staff and captains addressed some of the issues we had after the game and then left the rink looking forward to bouncing back tomorrow."

Colgate struck first, scoring two goals within a minute of each other in the first period. First, during a Colgate power-play, Jessie Eldridge passed from behind the Clarkson net to Megan Sullivan who scored her fifth goal of the year. 45 seconds later, the Raiders doubled their lead when Olivia Zafuto stole a Clarkson pass and took a shot that found the back of the net.

Clarkson drew a goal back at 14:20 in the first period. With both teams skating with just four players, senior captain Shannon MacAulay received a pass from freshman Loren Gabel near the boards. MacAulay sent a pass across to ice to senior assistant captain Erin Ambrose whose one-time shot found its mark.

The Golden Knights tied the game at 2 with 1:34 remaining in the second stanza. The puck was put in front of the Colgate net with players from both teams trying to get ahold of it. MacAulay and freshman Kelly Mariani both had touches on the puck in the scramble before Gabel was finally able to direct it home.

Clarkson was not level for very long though, with Colgate regaining their lead 4:48 into the third period. The goal again came during an extra man opportunity for Colgate. Annika Zalewaski centered the puck for Shelby Perry to score.

With time winding down, Clarkson pushed forward for the tying goal. Freshman goaltender Shea Tiley was pulled for an extra attacker with less than two minutes remaining and the move payed off five seconds later. Junior assistant captain Cayley Mercer's close range shot rebounded to sophomore Savannah Harmon. Harmon took the puck behind the Colgate net and swung around looking for an option. She found senior assistant captain Olivia Howe all alone in the crease and Howe made no mistake burying the puck into the goal, sending the game into overtime.

However, although Clarkson seemed to take the momentum into the extra period, Colgate struck almost immediately. The faceoff was won by the Raiders and the puck got to the stick of Lauren Wildfang who swung it to Bailey Larson, who took it into the offensive zone. Larson sent the puck to the front of the Clarkson net where Shae Labbe was waiting to. Labbe flicked the puck past Tiley for the game-winning score.

Clarkson finished with a 36-19 advantage in shots. However, Clarkson could not score on its five extra man opportunities while Colgate was successful on two out of three chances. Tiley made 15 saves for Clarkson while Julia Vandyk made 33 stops for Colgate.

Clarkson will play its final game of 2015 when the Green and Gold host Colgate for a 4:00 pm game tomorrow afternoon.
