Clemente, Brown turn back Saints 4-1

Brown goalie Mike Clemente continued to weave a spell on St. Lawrence's offense and the Bears assured themselves of at least a point against the Saints for the 20th consecutive year with a 4-1 win at Appleton on Sunday, leaving the Saints with just a single point in a big home series at the mid-point of the ECAC league season.

The game was originally scheduled for Friday, but was postponed due to a winter storm and power outage in Canton. Brown showed plenty of power in Sunday's game, scoring on a late second period power play and just seconds after a power play expired early in the third to take a 3-0 lead and riding another strong performance against the Saints by Clemente to their fourth straight win in the series. The Bears improve to 7-7-3 overall and 4-4-2 in league play while the Saints, 11-12-3, 4-6-1, will try to regroup after taking only one point in the weekend set, a 3-3 tie with Yale on Saturday. The Saints will play at Clarkson in a single game next Saturday

"Brown came out with a lot of intensity and I though outworked us for much of the game," said Saint associate head coach Mike Hurlbut. "We had a terrible second period and they cashed in, and while we were somewhat better in the third, we couldn't get back into it. We'll have to put this one behind us and gear up for a big one at Clarkson next Saturday."

Neither team was able to score in the first period in Sunday's game, although Brown's Ryan Jacobson had a shot rink off the inside of the post and stay out of the net in the first two minutes of play. The Saints came up empty despite three power plays and a 44 second five-on-three advantage

Brown took control of the game in the second period, outshooting the Saints 18-6 and grabbing a 2-0 lead. Freshman wing Ryan Jacobson started the scoring 3:29 into the period, taking a pass from Matt Lorito and faking a forehand shot before going to the backhand for the goal, his eighth of the year. Zaires made it a 2-0 game at 17:16 on a Brown power play as he picked up a rebound to the right of Saint goalie Matt Weninger and snapped it into the upper corner for his second of the season.

Zaires scored his second of the night just five seconds after a power play had expired, tucking the puck in from right in front at 1:02 of the third and while sophomore defenseman Pat Raley got one back on a power play shot past a screened Clements at 14:24, it was the only goal the Saints could muster and Brown senior Bobby Farnham iced it with a empty net goal at 18:59. Raley's first goal of the year was set up by defensive partner George Hughes and forward Patrick Doherty

Clemente improved to 3-0-1 in six career appearances against the Saints and has stopped 110 of 115 shots faced in those six appearances, a .956 save percentage. He made 22 saves on Sunday and has held the Saints to a single goal in his last three starts against them, all wins. Weninger, who held the Saints in the game with 16 second period saves, finished with 29.
