A lengthy unbeaten streak came to an end for the Clarkson University Hockey team on Saturday night as 11th-ranked Union College handed the Golden Knights a 3-1 loss in ECAC Hockey action before 2,678 fans at Cheel Arena.
Clarkson, which saw its streak end at seven games (6-0-1), goes to 6-2-2 overall and to 1-1 in the conference. The Knights take to the road next weekend playing at league foes Quinnipiac and Princeton.
Union, which won its third straight to improve to 5-1-3 overall and to 2-0-0 in the league, controlled play in the first period outshooting the Knights 13-3 en route to a 2-0 lead after the opening 20 minutes.
Kyle Bodie started the scoring when he knocked in his own rebound off a pad save by Clarkson junior Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ONT) at 6:28. Mark Bennett and Brian Yanovitch assisted. Less than three minutes later, Bodie sent a pass up the left boards to Yanovitch, who skated down the wing and beat Karpowich at the near post at 8:55.
After a scoreless second stanza, the Dutchmen built their lead to 3-0 on a goal by Greg Coburn just 10 seconds into a power play at 6:23. Kelly Zajac and Wayne Simpson assisted.
The Knights, however, battled back in the period and ended up outshooting Union 14-4 over the final 20 minutes. Senior Julien Cayer (Longueuil, QUE) spoiled the visitors’ shutout bid when he took a pass from freshman Joe Zarbo (Grand Island, NY) at the top of the right circle, fought off a Union defender and slipped in his fourth goal of the year at 12:24. Freshman defenseman Kevin Tansey (Hammond, ONT) also assisted.
The Knights pulled Karpowich for the extra attacker with two minutes remaining, but despite some excellent scoring opportunities, could not get another shot past Union goaltender Troy Grosenick.
Union outshot Clarkson 25-23. Karpowich posted 22 saves, including 11 first-period stops.
The Knights were 0-of-2 on the power play, while the Dutchmen were 1-of-6 with the man-advantage.
Union hosts Brown and Yale next weekend at Messa Rink in Schenectady.
