Each year, the Clarkson University Cross Country team focuses on the CCOC (Cross Country-Only Championships) as the key event of the season since the student-athletes race against like-minded participants from other schools across the region. That focus resulted in tremendous results for the Golden Knights on Saturday, and two days later senior Alex Benway (Queensbury, NY) and Adam Merkwan (Meredith, NH) were rewarded with Liberty League Weekly honors for their outstanding performances.
Benway won the 8,000-meter race at Seneca Lakes State Park with a time of 26 minutes, 47 seconds, nearly a full minute ahead of the next participant among 140 other runners. With his second victory of the season, Benway was picked as Liberty League Performer of the Week.
Freshman Adam Merkwan didn't quite keep pace with Benway, but he was the top runner among the Knights' freshmen, finishing the race in 28:43.36, good enough for 10th place at the event. That time resulted in Merkwan gaining his first ever Liberty League Rookie of the Week honor.
The Golden Knights will race at the Liberty League Championships on October 29th, an event held at Vassar College.
