POTSDAM -- Nikki Carfi (Liverpool, NY) tallied a goal and two assists as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team defeated the Wellesley Blue 3-1 in its season opener Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.
Clarkson will host Cortland State tomorrow at noon at Hantz Turf Field while Wellesley travels to play St. Lawrence.
The Knights nearly got on the scoreboard very early as Carfi hit the post in the opening minutes, and classmate Megan Strijek (Schenectady, NY) also nearly connected off the rebound. In the 27th minute, however, Carfi got another chance as she took a pass from Ashley DeHond (Penfield, NY) and ripped a shot passed Wellesley goalkeeper Claire Cerda from 25 yards out to give the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead.
Clarkson took the lead for good early in the second half as Carfi placed a corner kick right at the head of Hailey Hider (Pittsford, NY) and she did the rest as the Golden Knights took a 2-0 lead in the 52nd minute.
Wellesley made things interesting just over a minute later as Emily Watson crossed a ball that was mishandled by Clarkson goalkeeper Kim Kenline (Akron, NY) and LJ Foster booted it into the back of the net to cut the deficit in half.
The Green and Gold picked up an insurance goal by scoring again in the 65th minute as another Carfi corner kick found Aubrey Harris (Cicero, NY) who volleyed the pass into the goal through traffic in front for the Knights.
Kenline tallied four saves on the afternoon while Cerda had three of her own. The Knights outshot the Blue 13-7.
