Clarkson women's soccer drops 2-1 decision to RPI to close out 2018

Potsdam, NY – With conditions worsening by the minute in the second half, Emily Kaplan scored on a cross from Whitey Wisnom in the 84th minute to give Rensselaer a 2-1 win over the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights saw their three-game unbeaten streak come to an end, falling to 5-9-3 overall and 1-6-2 in Liberty League games, while Rensselaer moved to 5-9-3 overall and 2-5-2 in conference contests.

Rain started in pregame and became steadier as the game went on, eventually turning to sleet and hail by the second half, making the playing conditions less than prime for both teams. However, both goalies hands were good enough to keep solid shots on goal from getting through.

That said, both goalkeepers found themselves just out of position in the first half as each gave up a goal. In the 18th minute, Elyse Green came out in an attempt to deny Whitney Wisnom, but the RPI freshman eluded Green's hands with a quick cross into the middle of the box, finding teammate Emily Dunn near the six where she tapped in a groundball to put the Engineers up 1-0. It appeared as if that goal would stand up, at least for the first half, but in the waning seconds of the opening period Mia Fiacchi popped up a pass into the middle of the Rensselaer penalty box, finding Ashley Abel. The sophomore defender outmaneuvered the opposition and got just enough of a header to flick it over RPI goalkeeper Joey Lyons with just 12 seconds left in the half.

Both teams had chances with line drive shots near the posts, but each goalkeeper was up to the task. It was not until late in the contest that RPI was able to avoid extra time with a goal at the 83:40 mark. The play appeared harmless enough as Whitney Wisnom carried the ball near the end line of the Clarkson defensive zone. Wisnom, though, was able to weave through the defense and as she neared the goal she sent a cross into the middle of the box, finding the foot of Emily Kaplan, who hit a hard grounder through the defense and past Green for what proved to be the game-winner.

Rensselaer finished with a 13-8 edge in shots, getting all of that advantage in the second half when it led 9-4 in that category. The Engineers also held a 6-3 lead in corner kick chances. Green made five stops for the Knights, while Lyons stopped three shots for RPI.
