After missing on their first 15 shots on the evening, the Clarkson Women's Soccer team managed to find the back of the net to defeat the Potsdam State Bears 1-0 on Wednesday night on the Potsdam State campus.
The Golden Knights will stay on the road as they travel to play Houghton College Saturday at noon. Potsdam State travels to play Elmira College on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
The first half proved to be a feeling out period for both sides, as Clarkson outshot Potsdam 6-3 but neither team was able to develop much momentum. Of the nine shots, only two were on net, as Hailey Hider (Pittsford, NY) put one on target in the 12th minute and Kim Kenline (Akron, NY) recorded a save in the 22nd minute for the Knights.
Play picked up early in the second half as Nikki Carfi (Liverpool, NY) fired two shots wide in the first three minutes of the half. The Green and Gold tallied eleven shots in the half, the most important coming from Megan Strijek (Schenectady, NY). After re-entering the game in the 72nd minute, Strijek fired three shots on goal over the next four minutes, all of which were saved by Potsdam goalkeeper Sarah Livecchi. Finally, in the 80th minute, Hider passed to Strijek who headed it from point blank range passed the goalie for what proved to be the game winning goal.
Potsdam State desperately put two shots on goal and had a third blocked in the final 10 minutes, but Kenline and the defense preserved the shutout. The Golden Knights outshot the Bears 17-8 on the evening and Kenline recorded three saves in the process.
