In an evenly played Liberty League contest played under a steady freezing drizzle at Hantz Turf Field on Friday afternoon, Union College was able to pull away from the Clarkson University Women’s Lacrosse team in the second half to gain a 16-14 victory on the road.

Union opened the game with goals by Emily McGrail and Heather Fraser to take a quick lead, but Clarkson scored eight of the next 13 goals to grab an 8-7 advantage at the half. Senior Alyssa Cristaldi (North Syracuse, NY) tallied with two seconds remaining before the break to give the Golden Knights the edge after the opening 30 minutes.

The Dutchwomen, however, began the second half with four straight scores to take a three-goal lead, at 11-8, with 22 minutes remaining. Clarkson would make it a one-goal game, at 12-11 with 17:11 left with a score by senior Katie VanDeValk (Baldwinsville, NY). The Green and Gold would not get any closer though as McGrail and Fraser combined for the visitors’ final four goals to hold off the Knights.

Union outshot Clarkson 30-24 and held an 18-14 edge in ground balls.

Cristaldi and VanDeValk paced the Knights offense with six goals each. Freshman Christine Wright (Watertown, NY) tallied twice.

McGrail and Fraser recorded eight points apiece for the Dutchwomen, who won their fourth straight game. McGrail scored a game-high seven goals and added one assist, while Fraser tallied six goals and two assists.

Kim Grinhaus made seven saves in the Dutchwomen’s net to record the win. Junior Kara DiNatale (Auburn, NH) made six stops for the Knights. DiNatale and Wright both picked up a team-high three ground balls for Clarkson.

Jessica Farland and Michele Guyette rounded out the Union goal scorers with two and one tally, respectively.

Clarkson, at 8-3 overall and 3-3 in the Liberty League, host conference foe William Smith on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Union, which improved its records to 5-3 and 3-1, plays at Liberty League rival St. Lawrence in Canton on Saturday.
