Clarkson women's hockey escapes with 2-1 win

A goal early in the third period from freshman Savannah Harmon (Downers Grove, IL) helped the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team escape Troy with a 2-1 win over Rensselear on Friday night.

Clarkson is now 18-8-3 overall and 12-3-2 in ECAC Hockey games, which places them in a three-way tie for second place, just a solitary point behind league-leading Harvard. Rensselear is 5-19-4 overall and their 3-13-1 record in ECAC Hockey games places them in tenth place.

Clarkson would take the lead the lead 5:58 into the first period when junior Cayley Mercer (Exeter, ONT) collected a pass from junior assistant captain Renata Fast (Burlington, ONT) and skated past the RPI goalie and finished into an open net. It was her team-leading 17th goal of the season.

RPI would tie the game at 18:17 of the second period when Alex Gruschow scored a short-handed goal for the Engineers.

However, just 54 seconds into the third period, the Golden Knights would regain the lead for good when Harmon scored a power-play goal, with senior Christine Lambert (Thetford Mines, QUE) and Mercer picking up assists on the goal. Lambert now has at least a point in four straight games.

Clarkson freshman goaltender Shea Tiley (Owen Sound, ONT) finished with 27 saves. Clarkson scored on one of their five man-advantage opportunities while stopping Rensselear on all nine of their power plays. Clarkson was outshot 28-25, but was still able to extend their winning streak to three games for the first time in 2015.

The Green and Gold, winners of three straight, will travel to Union tomorrow for a 4:00 pm game.
