Five different Golden Knights scored goals as the defending National Champion Clarkson University Women's Hockey team completed a weekend sweep of Bemidji State by defeating the Beavers 5-4 at Cheel Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Knights, who shut out the Beavers 2-0 on Friday, improve to 3-0-1 on the young season and have not lost in the last 20 games (18-0-2), dating back to January 20.
Clarkson built a commanding 5-2 lead over Bemidji State (1-2-1) midway through the third period, before the visitors scored a pair of extra attacker goals in the final two minutes to make the score close.
At 4:40 of the first period, senior defenseman Savannah Harmon (Downers Grove, IL) put the Knights on top with a power-play tally. Clarkson's captain took a pass out of the corner by junior Loren Gabel (Kitchener, ONT) and fired in a wrist shot from the slot for her second goal of the season. Sophomore defenseman Ella Shelton (Ingersol, ONT) also assisted.
Gabel made it 2-0 with a highlight-reel goal early in the second period. The junior left wing forced a turnover in the Clarkson end, played the puck off the boards to herself and finished off a breakaway by slipping a shot through the 5-hole of Beavers' goalie Lauren Bench at 2:13 for her second goal of the season.
Bemidji State got on the scoreboard for the first time this weekend, at 4:44 on a goal by Jacqueline Kaasa off a 3-on-1 rush.
The Knights regained the two-goal lead when junior Kelly Mariani (Mississauga, ONT) converted on a 2-on-1 rush at 10:27. Harmon and senior Amanda Titus (Stittsville, ONT) assisted on the score which gave the Green and Gold a 3-1 lead through 40 minutes.
Clarkson sandwiched a pair of goals around a Bemidji State tally in the opening half of the final frame to take a 5-2 lead.
Titus picked up her first goal of the season at 3:13 of the third, scoring on a shot from the right circle. Mariani and junior defenseman Emma Keenan (Calgary, ALB) assisted.
The Beavers Clair Degeorge connected on the power play at 6:51 for the visitors' second goal of the game.
The Knights got that one back when freshman Elizabeth Giguere (Quebec City, QUE) jammed in a loose puck at the top of the crease for her third collegiate goal. Keenan and sophomore Michaela Pejzlova (Pardubice Czech Rep.) assisted.
The Beavers' Haley Mack scored at 18:35 and Kiki Radke tallied Bemidji's fourth goal with four seconds remaining.
Clarkson outshot the Beavers 41-27. Senior Shea Tiley (Owen Sound, ONT) posted 23 saves.
The Knights went 1-of-3 on the power play and killed off four of Bemidji State's six man-advantage chances.
