POTSDAM -- A new era for the Clarkson University Women’s Soccer team, under first-year head coach Sarah Raymond, opened impressively as the Golden Knights dominated SUNYIT in the opening round of the North Country Classic with a 3-0 victory at Hantz Turf Field on Friday afternoon.

The Knights controlled play throughout with a 27-3 shot advantage and received goals from three different players. The Green and Gold also held a 7-1 margin in corner kicks.

Just 5:28 into the opening game of the season, junior Linde Zajac (Cicero, NY) took a pass in the box from freshman Taylor Abraham (Canandaigua, NY) and connected on a shot in close that deflected in off the goaltender’s hand and into the back of the net for her fifth career goal.

Clarkson added to its lead early in the second half as senior Alix Petitti (Amsterdam, NY) knocked in a rebound off Zajac’s shot at 50:30. Sophomore Marissa Cook (Chateaugay, NY) closed out the scoring with a chip shot over the Wildcats’ goaltender in the 75th minute.

In her first collegiate action, freshman Brianna Thibeau (Salem, NY) did not have to make a save to post her first career shutout.

Aubrey Campbell (13) and Margaret Werenczak (1) combined for 14 saves in the SUNYIT goal.

Clarkson is back in action on Saturday when it plays Cortland State in the second round of the tournament, beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Clarkson’s grass field. SUNYIT will play St. Lawrence at 2:00 p.m.

In the other first-round game at Hantz Turf Field, Cortland State received a late goal from Jackie DeLuise to edge St. Lawrence 1-0. DeLuise scored on a hard shot from the top of the box, off an assist from Amanda Margolis, with just over 10 minutes to play in regulation.

The Red Dragons outshot the Saints 15-10. Both teams had two corner kicks. Pam Monnier posted the shutout behind four saves. Abbey van Geldern made four stops for St. Lawrence.
