POTSDAM -- Despite losing some key components from last year's conference regular-season championship team, the Clarkson University Volleyball team was chosen as a title contender again in the Liberty League Pre-Season Poll on Monday.
The Golden Knights, who were heavy favorites in 2011 with a nine-point edge in the tally and five first-place votes among the seven, were picked second in the Liberty League poll in 2012. Skidmore, which narrowly beat Clarkson in five sets in the Liberty League post-season tournament, earned the top spot with 32 points and three first-place votes.
The Knights were right there as well with 30 points and three first-place votes. Vassar College was third and earned the final first-place choice and a total of 26 points. RIT (22), St. Lawrence (16), Union (15), and Bard College (6) rounded out the poll.
Clarkson returns three Liberty League All-Stars from last year's squad, including junior Lani Durio (Austin, TX), an AVCA All-American Honorable Mention, classmate Erika Chin (Katy, TX), and Adrienne Walker (Centennial, CO), who was picked as the Liberty League Rookie of the Year in 2011.
The Golden Knights open the 2012 season on Friday at the Springfield Invitational.
