Clarkson swimmers In top two at North Country Invitational

Potsdam, NY - Several first place finishes highlighted the second day of the annual North Country Invitational for the Clarkson University Swimming teams as the Golden Knights' men claimed the title for the tournament and the women were narrowly beaten out to take second place.

Clarkson's men finished in first by a wide margin with 468 points, ahead of St. Michael's (362), Monroe Community College (359), Potsdam State (329) and Colby-Sawyer (225), while the women finished with 399 points, just two behind Monroe Community College (401) and two ahead of St. Michaels' (397) in a very tight race for first. Colby-Sawyer (292) and Potsdam State (240) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

The top individual performance of the day for Clarkson was sophomore Kayla Weckesser, who finished first in the 400 individual medley (5:11.65) and 200 breaststroke (2:40.70). Her 400 IM time was most impressive as she beat the rest of the field by more than 20 seconds. Brooke Atkinson won the 200 butterfly in 2:25.79 and was followed by her sister Emma Atkinson (2:34.26) in second place. Kristin Schubert also took second in the 100 freestyle (55.59) and third in the 100 backstroke (1:05.07), one spot behind Lauren Grasberger, who finished in 1:03.78. Grasberger, Weckesser, Brooke Atkinson and Schubert also combined for the top 200 medley relay time, winning the event in 1:57.19.

On the men's side, senior Jon Ketcham hit the pads first for the 200 breaststroke, winning the event in 2:29.99, and junior Chris Bay was the top performer in the 100 freestye in 50 seconds flat. Will Delaney also was the top diver in the 3-meter dive with a score of 140.0. Finishing third in their respective events were Sam Zwierzchowski (1650 freestyle, 18:57.75), Chris Bankaitis (400 individual medley, 4:42.66) and Gavin Lopata (200 freestyle, 1:53.63). Clarkson's 200 medley relay team on the men's side also had the top time as Lopata, Ketcham, Zwierzchowski and Bay combined for a time of 1:44.00.
