Clarkson swimmers dominates in dual meet versus Utica

Potsdam, NY – Senior Sarah Halstead and freshman Benjamin Vondrak each won three events as the Clarkson University Swimming and Diving team closed out the regular season with a sweep of Utica College at Fuller Pool.

The Golden Knights' women won 165-109 and the men defeated the Pioneers by a score of 174-98.

On the women's side, the Golden Knights won 12 individual events led by Halstead's three victories. She won the 50 backstroke (33.31 seconds), 50 freestyle (30.29) and the 100 freestyle (1:06.01). Lauren Grasberger and Brooke Atkinson also won a pair of individual races, with Grasberger taking top honors in the 200 freestyle (2:21.90) and the 100 backstroke (1:11.81) and Atkinson claiming first in the 100 butterfly (1:12.50) and 50 butterfly (32.92). Joining Halstead, Grasberger, and Atkinson on the top spot of the podium were five other competitors. Laura Dowdy led off with a win in the 800 freestyle (11:43.24), Kayla Weckesser hit the pad first in the 100 breaststroke (1:27.24) and Tiffany Catano took first in the 100 individual medley (1:16.59), though her score was recorded as an exhibition. Joanne Bechaz and Isabel Dengos each won their diving events, too, with Bechaz scoring 164.50 in the 1-meter and Dengos recording a 134.00 in the 3-meter.

Vondrak led the charge for the men with three victories, though one of his first-place showings was swam as an exhibition. Vondrak gained points in the 50 breaststroke (31.45) and the 100 breaststroke (1:10.35) while he had the top time in the 100 individual medley (1:04.32) as an exhibition. Senior Chris Bay won both the 50 freestyle (25.04) and 50 butterfly (27.90) and freshman Jacob Baker earned top honors in the 50 backstroke (29.40) and 100 backstroke (1:03.43). John Magnuson (100 butterfly, 1:02.99), Gavin Lopata (100 freestyle, 56.24), and Brent Reid (1-meter, 263.40) also won individual events for the Knights.
