Four different players scored goals for the Clarkson University Hockey team on Saturday night, but it wasn’t enough as the Golden Knights lost on a last-minute goal to Colorado College, falling 5-4 on the road.

Clarkson suffered a pair of 5-4 losses in its season-opening series, also coming up just short on Friday night to the Tigers at the World Arena in Colorado Springs.

Leading 4-3 after 40 minutes, the Knights could not seal the deal in the third period as Colorado College scored twice, including the game-winner with just one minute remaining in regulation. William Rapuzzi’s goal at the 19:00 mark sent the home team away with the victory, ending a strong outing by the Green and Gold on a disappointing note. Clarkson is now 0-11-3 all-time against Colorado College, but has only been outscored 13-11 combined in the last four meetings.

Junior Allan McPherson (Kinburn, ONT) led Clarkson offensively with a game-high three points on one goal and two assists. The Tigers outshot the Knights 42-21, but freshman goaltender Greg Lewis (Mars, PA) gave Clarkson a chance to gain the road win with a 37-save effort in his first career start.

The Knights held early leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but had to settle for a 2-2 tie through the opening 20 minutes. Just 1:17 after the opening faceoff, Clarkson grabbed its first lead of the season when sophomore defenseman James Howden (Edgeley, SASK) connected on a wrist shot with McPherson and freshman Pat Megannety (Oakville, ONT) earning the assists.

Colorado College scored its first with Alexander Krushelnyski’s tally at 5:39.

Megannety answered right back, however, at 6:05 with his second goal of the weekend. McPherson and senior defenseman Nik Pokulok (Vaudreuil-Dorion, QUE) assisted.

Shortly after killing off a five-minute major, Clarkson allowed the Tigers to tie it 2-2 with Scott Winkler scoring at 14:45. Colorado took its first lead of the game at 7:11 of the second period when Archie Skalbeck connected for a power-play marker.

The Knights, however, stormed right back with a pair of goals 57 seconds apart to go on top 4-3 midway through the second stanza. Just 21 seconds after the Tigers’ third goal, junior Jarrett Burton (Echo Bay, ONT) stole the puck and slipped in an unassisted goal for his second score of the weekend to tie the game 3-3.

McPherson, already with two assists on the night, put Clarkson in the lead, 4-3, by finishing off a pass from sophomore Patrick Marsh (Oakville, ONT) at 13:25.

Midway through the third period, Skalbeck scored his second goal of the game to tie the game once again.

Clarkson went scoreless on its two power play for the night, while the Tigers went 1-of-4 with the man-advantage.
