Colchester, VT - Kristin Schubert and Chris Bay each paced the fields for the sprint freestyle races as the Clarkson University Swimming team tallied a split in a dual meet against St. Michael's College on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights' men finished with a narrow 106-99 victory, while the women dropped a 142-93 decision against the Purple Knights. Clarkson will participate in the annual North Country Invitational next weekend across town at Potsdam State.
After the Knights dropped the two relay events to begin the day, Connor Koehler started off Clarkson's individual efforts with a win in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:29.12. Shortly thereafter, Kristin Schubert picked up wins in both the 50 freestyle (26.39 seconds) and 100 freestyle (57.42), a feat which Chris Bay mirrored on the men's side when he took both events (22.59 seconds, 50 freestyle; 50.01 seconds, 100 freestyle). Senior Nick Short also won a pair of events for Clarkson's men, finishing as the top performer in both the 200 individual medley (2:07.71) and 200 backstroke (2:06.18). Freshmen Gavin Lopata and Emma Atkinson both won a distance freestyle event for Clarkson, too, as both came in at the top of the heap in the 500 freestyle. Lopata's 5:24.69 in the 500 free was the best time for the men, while Atkinson's 6:03.10 was good enough for first in the women's 500 free. Sophomore Kayla Weckesser also took the top spot in the 200 breaststroke (2:43.60) to close out Clarkson's individual winners.
