In what has become a pattern during this year's spring trip to Florida, the Clarkson University Softball team split a doubleheader. The Golden Knights defeated D'Youville college in the morning game by the score of 7-0 before falling to the University of Chicago 9-1 in six innings.

Clarkson is 8-6 on the season with two games left in the Florida trip.

Against D'Youville, Clarkson used two big offensive innings and a shutdown pitching performance by Leah Allen to beat the Spartans.

The game was scoreless through the first four innings, but Clarkson finally broke through in the top of the fifth. Erika Jensen started the inning reaching base on a Spartans' error. After a Clarkson flyout, Danielle Whitham hit a bunt single with Jensen moving to second base. Raeanna Dunn followed with a walk to load the bases. Summer Lancette drove in Jensen with a groundout and reached base herself when D'Youville made another error. Jamie Bridge matched Lancette as she drove in Whitham while reaching on an error herself. Michelle Winn then brought home Lancette with a groundout for the fourth run of the inning.

Clarkson added three more runs in the top of the seventh. Lancette led off the frame with a single and then stole second base. A Bridge single scored Lancette. Winn's groundout moved Bridge up to second base. A Liz Caggiano single plated Bridge and then after a Clarkson flyout, two consecutive D'Youville errors allowed Caggiano to score the seventh and final run of the game.

Leah Allen threw the first complete game shutout of her collegiate career. Allen allowed just five hits in seven innings and had four strikeouts.

Clarkson fell behind early against Chicago and never recovered as the Maroons racked up nine runs and 17 hits.

Chicago took the lead with a two run first inning and added a third in the third inning. The Maroons broke open the game with two more runs in the fifth and four in the sixth.

Clarkson tried to stage a two out rally in the six inning, hoping to get within eight runs and extend the game to the seventh inning. Bridge started the rally with a single to center field and then she moved herself into scoring position by stealing second base. Bridge came around to score when Winn knocked a single to right field. However, that was the end of the rally as a groundout ended the game.

Clarkson will close out its spring trip with games against Bowdoin and Babson.
