Clermont, FL – Two late games for the Clarkson University Softball team did not have the desired outcome for the Golden Knights, as the Green and Gold fell to Babson 5-2 in their opener and then 13-2 in five innings against Tufts University.
The Golden Knights fell to 1-7 overall with their two losses, but will look to get back on track on Sunday against Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Southern Maine.
Babson scored all of the runs it would need in the bottom of the second, plating four runs on four hits. Alex Corrigan started the rally with a single to center and Erica Pavlo followed with a single up the middle. The pair each advanced a base on a wild pitch, and Ali Reilly delivered a single to score both, putting the Beavers up 2-0. Babson tacked on two more thanks to a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch.
Clarkson threatened in the top of the third, but saw their rally squashed by a double play. That wouldn't be the case in the fourth, as the Knights broke through with a run. Hannah Isaacson doubled down the left field line and was lifted for pinch runner Sam Swiesz. She advanced to third on a single from Riley LeBourveau, putting runners on the corners and setting the stage for a two-out single from Summer Lancette.
The Knights added another run in the fifth. With runners on first and second, the Babson defense got a groundball, but an attempted force out at third was misplayed, allowing Bridget Woolley to score on the error. Babson scored an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning on an Alex Corrigan sacrifice fly, but Ali Reilly dodged danger enough to keep Clarkson off the scoreboard in the final two innings.
Lancette and LeBourveau each recorded a pair of hits for the Knights. Leah Allen pitched four solid innings of relief, striking out three and allowing four hits. For Babson, Reilly starred both in the circle and at the plate, earning the win with seven strong frames and striking out five while going 2-for-3 at the dish.
