With goals from three different players and a 16-save outing from freshman Steve Perry (Ligonier, PA) the Clarkson University Hockey team skated past long-time rival Rennselaer 3-0 in ECAC Hockey action before 2,235 fans at Cheel Arena on Friday night.

The Golden Knights, who snapped a three-game losing skid to RPI, improved their record to 16-9-2 overall and to 9-4 in ECAC Hockey. Clarkson plays host to Union on Saturday in a 7:00 p.m. contest.

Senior Allan McPherson (Kinburn, ONT) and sophomores Todd Christian (Norwalk, CT) and Kevin Tansey (Hammond, CT) paced the Clarkson offense with a goal apiece as the Green and Gold improved their record at home to 9-2-1. The Knights outshot an undermanned Engineer squad (10-11-4, 4-6-3) 29-16.

Perry posted seven first-period saves, three stops in the middle frame and finished with six over the final 20 minutes to post his third shutout of the season and Clarkson's first whitewash of RPI in 17 years.

McPherson scored his team-high ninth goal of the season, a power-play tally at 7:33 of the first. The Knights' snapped the string of RPI's successful penalty kills at 11, connecting on the first man-advantage of the game when McPherson knocked in a bouncing puck right in front after a deflection at the top of the crease by classmate Will Frederick (Allison Park, PA) for his 37th career goal and 90th career point. Senior captain Ben Sexton (Kanata, ONT) sent a pass into the slot from the corner to start the scoring play.

Clarkson took a 2-0 lead early in the middle frame when Christian scored his first goal of the season on a wrist shot from the top of the right circle that found its way into the back of the net through a screen in front. Sophomore Christian Powers (Carlisle, ONT) won a faceoff back to Christian to pick up the lone assist and his first point of the season.

The Knights added to their lead late in second, scoring on a delayed penalty to build a 3-0 lead through 40 minutes. Tansey, a defenseman, jumped into the rush during a four-on-four situation and took a pass in the slot from senior Jarrett Burton (Echo Bay, ONT), where he fired in a wrist shot for his third goal of the season at 15:45. Frederick also assisted for his second point of the night.

Clarkson was 1-of-5 on the power play and killed off RPI's lone man-advantage opportunity.

Scott Diebold made 26 saves for the Engineers, who were playing without several regulars who were sitting out the game serving suspensions.
