Behind a strong first-half effort, and solid offensive and defensive play the Clarkson University Lacrosse team won its second straight game with a dominating 10-4 victory over 15th-ranked Rensselaer in Liberty League action at Hantz Turf Field on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Ryan Cole (Orchard Park, NY) was in top form in the Clarkson goal with a nine-save effort, including four stops in the first half as the Golden Knights held the Engineers off the scoreboard through the opening 30 minutes.

Junior midfielder Brendon Shearin (Goffstown, NH) led a balanced scoring outing by the Green and Gold with a game-high three points on two goals and one assist. Senior Eric Gollands (Chelmsford, MA) and freshman Corey Herrington (Camillus, NY) also scored two goals apiece.

The Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter and added two more goals in the second to take a 5-0 lead at the break. Senior Matt Cyr (Cheshire, CT) put Clarkson on top 6-0 early in the third quarter before Rensselaer (7-2, 1-1 Liberty League) got on the scoreboard. The Engineers scored four of the next five goals to make it a 7-4 game early in the final quarter. Clarkson, however, tallied the game’s last three goals to gain its fifth victory in the last six meetings against Rensselaer.

Juniors Matt McCabe (Syracuse, NY) and Kyle Kasprzyk (Orchard Park, NY) and freshman Matthew Gold (Pittsford, NY) also scored in the victory.

The Knights outshot the Engineers 39-25 and controlled ground balls 31-19, while dominating faceoffs. Sophomore Jack Keenan (Brasher Falls, NY) won 13-of-18 draws to start the Clarkson offense. Keenan, Cole, senior Corey Flanigan (Rochester, NY) and sophomore defenseman Rick Clement (Cotuit, MA) each picked up four ground balls in a balanced effort by the Knights.

RPI got goals from Brett Overend, Andrew Liptak, Wes Rudy and Mike Sarson.

Clarkson, which stands at 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the Liberty League, breaks from conference play this week with a non-league match up against cross-town rival Potsdam State on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. on Hantz Turf Field.
