Junior captain Shannon MacAuley (Mt. Herbert, PEI) earned her first collegiate hat trick and the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team began the defense of their ECAC Hockey regular season title by defeating visiting St. Lawrence 5-0 on Tuesday night at Cheel Arena.

Winners of three straight, the Golden Knights are now 6-3 overall and 1-0 in ECAC Hockey play and will travel to Brown and Yale this weekend for league contests.

MacAuley opened the scoring at 16:32 in the first period. Danielle Matteucci (Fruitvale, BC) had her shot from the top saved and the rebound fell to MacAuley who lifted a shot under the crossbar. Freshman defender Savannah Harmon (Downers Grove, IL) was also credited with an assist on the score.

Carley Mercer (Exteter, ONT) would double the Clarkson lead at 17:43 in the second period when she collected a pass from Genevieve Bannon (Candiac, QUE) and skated past a lone St. Lawrence defender and was able to score on the Saints goalie for her seventh goal of the season.

The Golden Knights would break the game open in the third period, scoring three goals, including two by MacAuley. The captain got her second goal at 10:14 on another scramble in front of the net and she was able to direct the puck into the back of the net. At 17:38, MacAuley would complete her hat trick by scoring an empty-net goal for her seventh tally of the year and 29th career marker. Bannon would complete the scoring when she scored her own empty-net goal and seventh tally of the season at 18:58.

Freshman Shea Tiley (Owen Sound, ONT) made 19 saves to complete her third shutout of the season. She also had an assist on Mercer's goal. Clarkson outshot St. Lawrence 30-19. Clarkson was 0-of-2 on the power play and killed all four of the Saints' extra-man opportunities.
