Clarkson opens with 4-3 Win over McGill

In a penalty-filled exhibition contest the Clarkson University Hockey team prevailed for a 4-3 victory over McGill University before 1,949 fans at Cheel Arena on Saturday evening.

The Golden Knights officially open their 94th season and 25th year at Cheel when they host Atlantic Hockey foes RIT and Niagara next Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Playing for the first time in 2015-16, the Green and Gold received goals from seniors Jeff DiNallo and Pat Megannety, junior Jordan Boucher and sophomore defenseman Kelly Summers, while junior Steve Perry posted 18 saves as Clarkson improved its all-time record to 17-2 against Canadian college foes in Cheel.

"Overall I thought it was a good first test for us," stated Clarkson Head Coach Casey Jones. "We have been allowed to do up to two hours (practice) a week up to this point, so things have been kind of sporadic. I think everything that occurred in that game, were scenarios that we have not covered yet. We haven't touch 4x4. We haven't been able to do a ton on faceoffs. Just some things we have not seen yet. So it was great to get the opportunity to get to do that in our first game. I thought they were a good team. They made some plays. We weren't perfect by any stretch. We didn't get a puck out. We didn't get a puck deep. The game of hockey is simple. That is why I think they got a couple of goals."

The Knights jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead before the game was 10 minutes old on tallies by DiNallo and Summers. McGill came back with goals from Patrick Delisle-Houd and former Clarkson defenseman Sam Labrecque to tie the score after the first period.

Goals by Megannety and Boucher early in the second frame built Clarkson's lead to 4-2 at 9:37 of the second. The RedMen got one back with Delisle-Houd's second of the night with 2:17 remaining in the period.

That would be all the scoring, however as the teams were scoreless over the final 20 minutes.

The Knights outshot McGill 39-21, including a 14-4 margin in the third.

Both teams were called for 54 minutes in penalties with each team receiving three 10-minute game misconducts.
