Clarkson men's soccer team drops season opener to Eastern Connecticut State

CANTON -- Besides the key column, all of the statistics between the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team and Eastern Connecticut State were equal or in the Golden Knights' favor.

However, the most important stat of all found the Knights on the downside, as they fell to EConn 3-0 on the first day of the North Country Classic held on the campus of St. Lawrence University.

The Golden Knights will look to rebound on Sunday when the team faces Oneonta State.

EConn took little time getting on the scoreboard, recording its first goal of the game at the 5:30 mark. Cory Tobler gathered in a pass at the top of the box, stepped around a defender and put his shot between the goaltender and the near post for a 1-0 lead early.

The score remained that way through rest of the half and through the first 15 minutes of the second. However, Tobler found the back of the net again in the 61st minute when Tobler took a long lead pass from Matt Furman and scored on a breakaway.

EConn then added an insurance goal 10 minutes later as Mitch Power took a shot from just inside the box that was deflected by Clarkson keeper Saverino Spagnolo (Ottawa, ONT). Unfortunately for the Knights, Matt Esposito was in perfect position to tap the ball over the goal line off the rebound.

EConn held a narrow 11-10 edge in shot and the two teams were equal in corner kick chances with three apiece. Spagnolo finished with four saves for Clarkson, while Carl Appel had six saves for the shutout.
