Clarkson men's soccer downs Canton 2-0

With the conference schedule looming, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team got back on the winning track by defeating SUNY Canton 2-0 on Wednesday night on Hantz Turf Field.

Clarkson now owns a 3-4-1 record while Canton's record drops to 0-7-0.

Coming into the game, Clarkson had lost two straight games, and needed to get started on the right foot after going down early in both of those losses. The Golden Knights did exactly that with an 11th minute goal. Tucker Wilcox swung in a corner kick and Jon Jones rose to head it back across the box. Jones' pass found Zachary Godin right in front of the goal and Godin flicked a header past the Canton keeper to open the scoring.

The score stayed 1-0 heading into the second half. Clarkson thought they had added a second goal in the 58th minute. Wilcox and Brian Kroetz played the ball between each other until Kroetz was able to get free at the top of the Canton box. Kroetz unleashed a low shot that had the goalkeeper beaten, but the ball caught the inside edge of the right post and cruelly ricocheted out of bounds.

The Green and Gold kept the pressure up and it would pay off in the 62nd minute. Kevin Calnan chipped a through ball to Maximilian Leetz on the left side of the box, with Leetz running through behind the defense. Leetz played a cross back along the goalmouth and Wilcox crashed in and was able to slam the ball into the goal. It was the seventh goal of the season for Wilcox, which is the highest total for a Clarkson player since Jon Banz bagged seven goals in 2002.

Clarkson finished with 16 shots to Canton's nine. Canton took six corner kicks while Clarkson had five of their own. In goal Michael King made four saves to complete his first clean sheet of the year, while Austin Lamay made six saves for the Kangaroos.

Clarkson will open their Liberty League schedule when they travel to Skidmore for a 2:00 pm game on Saturday.
