In one of its most complete efforts of the season, the Clarkson University Lacrosse team defeated Skidmore College 14-7 in Liberty League action at Hantz Turf Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights, who have won three of their last four games improve to 5-5 overall and to 2-2 in the conference. Clarkson opens a three-game road trip at Plattsburgh State on Wednesday.
Senior Corey Herrington (Camillus, NY) paced a productive offensive effort by the Green and Gold with six points, including five assists. Sophomore Ryan DaRin (Manlius, NY) scored three goals.
The Knights scored the game's first six goals en route to a 7-1 lead after the first quarter, and owned an 8-2 advantage after the opening 30 minutes. Clarkson outscored Skidmore (4-8, 1-4) 3-2 in the third quarter and traded three goals apiece in the final frame.
Clarkson outshot the Thoroughbreds 48-26 and controlled ground balls 33-20.
Senior Dylan Broomfield (Clinton, NY) and sophomore Ryan St. Croix (Camillus, NY) both scored twice. Senior Matthew Gold (Pittsford, NY) tallied three points (1-2) while freshman Sam Groves (Milton, NY) added a goal and an assist.
Broomfield won 17 of 22 faceoffs and picked up five ground balls. Junior Austin Case (Vestal, NY) also recorded five ground balls for the Knights.
Senior J.D. St. Croix (Camillus, NY), junior Keith Mierzwa (Fairport, NY) and sophomore Justin Gibson (Pleasanton, CA) led a stingy Clarkson defensive effort, which allowed Skidmore just one on goal in the first quarter.
Sophomore Nick Strandholm (Happy Valley, OR) made 10 saves to record his fifth win of the season in the Clarkson net.
Seniors Dylan Hrebenach (Saratoga Springs, NY), Jack Dowst (Weare, NH) and Mark Nortz (Lowville, NY) netted one goal apiece to round out a balanced scoring effort for Clarkson.
Kevin Mulvey scored team-high three goals for the Thoroughbreds.
