Potsdam, NY - A run of three straight goals in the fourth quarter a tie and gave the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team the momentum to defeat Potsdam State 8-7 in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon at Potsdam's Turf Field.

The Golden Knights edged back over .500 on the season, improving to 5-4 overall, and will host a pair of Liberty League opponents in Rensselaer and Union this weekend. Potsdam State dropped to 4-6 this spring.

The victory was Clarkson's fourth straight against the Bears, and the Knights now hold a 29-6 all-time mark against Potsdam.

Clarkson once again scored in bunches as the Golden Knights were shutout in the first quarter for the second straight game. However, the Knights were able to hold down Potsdam's offense, allowing just a single goal in the first quarter. The Bears produced two more goals just 13 seconds apart midway through the second, taking a 3-0 lead, but Clarkson rebounded to score four straight over the final six and a half minutes to take the lead at halftime, never trailing again.

The two teams traded goals in the third period and Potsdam tied things up early in the fourth before Eric Gollands (Chelmsford, MA) scored what proved to be a key goal at the 9:10 mark. Neither team produced any offense for the next seven minutes, but with less than three minutes to go senior Mitch Collins (Baldwinsville, NY)  and junior Matt McCabe (Syracuse, NY) scored goals 43 seconds apart to give the Knights a three-goal cushion.

Potsdam scored a goal with 29 seconds to go, and then another with four ticks left on the clock as Clarkson held on for the victory.

Clarkson out shot Potsdam, handily, 42-22 and held a 35-26 edge in groundballs. Collins and Josh Flacke (Schenectady, NY) each scored two goals, while McCabe, Bryan Huff (Hillsborough, NJ), Tyler Long (Liverpool, NY), and Gollans scored one goal each. Huff, Collins, Jon Furgal (New Hartford, NY) and Casey Dickinson (Mannsville, NY) each scooped up four groundballs as well.

Sophomore Pat Briggs (Baldwinsville, NY) made five saves to earn his second straight victory for Clarkson.

Potsdam's Zeppy O'Geen scored three goals and had five groundballs, while Peter Pike added two goals and an assist for the Bears. Pat Corbine, Potsdam's goalkeeper, stopped 12 shots.
