A four-game winning streak came to an end for Clarkson University on Saturday night as the Green and Gold closed out their ECAC Hockey opening weekend road trip in NY's Capital District falling 3-2 against 17th-ranked Union College at Messa Rink in Schenectady.

The Golden Knights, who defeated Rensselaer 6-0 in Troy on Friday, stand at 4-3 overall and 1-1 in ECAC Hockey play. Clarkson begins a stretch of four consecutive non-league games next Saturday when they play Canisius College in Buffalo.

In a hard-fought 60 minutes against Union (6-2-1, 2-2), the Knights were held to a season-low 15 shots while the Dutchmen put 29 on Clarkson junior goaltender Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN). Clarkson struggled with discipline and was called for a season-high nine penalties for 29 minutes. Union took advantage of the Knights' time in the penalty box and tallied twice on seven man-advantage opportunities. Clarkson was 1-of-4 on the power play.

For the seventh time in the first seven games, Clarkson scored the opening goal. Sophomore defenseman Connor McCarthy (LaSalle, QUE) connected for a power-play marker when his shot from the point deflected in off bodies in front and over the goal line at 6:03 of the first period for his first career score. Senior defenseman Aaron Thow (Toronto, ONT) and junior Haralds Egle (Liepaja, Latvia) picked up the assists.

Penalty trouble in the middle frame when the Knights were whistled for 23 minutes, caught up to the Green and Gold as the Dutchmen scored twice on the power play to take a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes. Ryan Walker tallied just 2:15 into the stanza and Brett Supinski connected on a 5-on-3 advantage to give the home team a one-goal lead.

Junior co-captain Nico Sturm (Augsburg, Germany) tied game 2-2 at 3:18 when he got behind the Union defense and flipped in his third goal of the weekend and fourth of the season. Sophomore Jack Jacome (Caledon, ONT) and junior Devin Brosseau (St. Lambert, QUE) set up the play.

Just over two minutes later, at 5:19, Union's Michael Ryan scored on a 2-on-1 rush for the game-winner.

Kielly finished with 26 saves. Clarkson only put five shots on goal in each period.
