Clarkson men's hockey strives for tourney title at Notre Dame

Unbeaten in its last five games the Clarkson University Hockey team will be looking to extend that mark as it travels to the Midwest over the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend to compete in Notre Dame's Shillelagh Tournament.

Guided by sixth-year head coach Casey Jones and assistant Phil Roy '00 and Josh Hauge, the Golden Knights will face off against Yale for the second time in seven days, playing a non-conference game in the opening round of the tournament on Friday 4:05 p.m. at the Compton Family Arena in South Bend, IN. The Knights will play either host Notre Dame or Holy Cross on Saturday at 4:05 or 7:35 p.m.

Clarkson stands at 7-5-2 overall and is tied for third place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 4-1-1 league slate. This past weekend at Cheel Arena, the Green and Gold held off Brown for a 3-2 victory on Friday, but squandered a two-goal lead on Saturday against Yale and had to settle for a 3-3 tie, which snapped a four-game winning streak.

• In-season tournament championship titles have been hard to come by for Clarkson. The Knights have won just two holiday tournaments over the past 26 years, claiming the 1995 RPI Invitational and the 2006 Badger Showdown. Since defeating Wisconsin (6-2) and Lake Superior (3-2) on December 29 and 30, 2006 at the Kohl Center in Madison. WI the Green and Gold have gone 3-13-2 in tournament/classic play during the regular season.

• In the rivalry against Yale, which first began in in 1930, the Knights hold a commanding 72-38-7 lead. The teams are tied 1-1-3 over the past five games. The Bulldogs, who are on a current three-game unbeaten streak (1-0-2) in the series, came back to tie Clarkson 3-3 in Cheel Arena a week ago on November 19.

• Freshman goaltender Jake Kielly has started 11 of Clarkson's first 14 games and posts a .915 save percentage and a 2.63 goals against average along with one shutout.

He is unbeaten in his last four starts after missing weekend action on November 4-5 with an illness.

• Balance and Depth. Twenty different Golden Knights have accounted for Clarkson's 47 goals through the first 14 games. During the current five-game unbeaten streak, 12 Knights have accounted for the 18 goals during that span.

• Clarkson Class of 2020 is the top producing freshman class in ECAC Hockey and is second overall in the NCAA. The Knights' seven rookie skaters have accounted for 36% of Clarkson's offense with 46 points on 14 goals and 32 assists through the first 14 games.

• The Knights' freshmen tallied five of the six goals in the three-point ECAC Hockey weekend against Brown and Yale, and recorded five of Clarkson's 11 assists over the two games.

• Freshman Devin Brosseau is second on the team in scoring with 12 points, and is the Knights' leading playmaker with nine assists. He recorded his first career mulitple-goal game with the Knights' first two scores in the 3-2 win over Brown. Brosseau also tops Clarkson in plus/minus at +9. Brosseau was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week for the second time this season. He was also named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the

Month for October.

• Rookies Nico Sturm and Sheldon Rempal are tied as Clarkson's third-leading scorers with 11 points apiece on three goals and eight assists.

• Sturm has the Knights' longest current point-scoring streak at six games. He has three goals and five assists during that span.

• The Freshman Line centered by Sturm (3-6), left wing Brosseau (3-5) and right wing Rempal (3-7) has accounted for nine goals and 18 assists over the past 10 games since skating together starting with the game at Providence (10/21).

• Senior Jordan Boucher tops the points chart for the Green and Gold with 13 on seven goals and six assists. He has four assists during the current five-game unbeaten streak. Boucher leads all current Golden Knights with 55 career points (24-31) through 91 games.

• Senior captain James de Haas leads the Knights in scoring from the blueline with eight points on three goals and five assists.

• Freshman Haralds Egle scored his third goal of the season for the game-winner in the one-goal victory over Brown on Friday. He has five points in 10 games.

• Clarkson is 4-0-1 on the road and 3-5-1 at home this season. The Knights were 5-11-1 in road games last season and 15-2-2 at Cheel Arena in 2015-16.

• The Knights have scored the opening goal in eight of the first 14 games, going 5-2-1 when they score first. Clarkson has scored the opening goal in each of the past four games.

• de Haas serves as the Knights' captain. Joining de Haas in leadership roles for Clarkson this season are senior Perry D'Arrisso and juniors Brett Gervais and Nic Pierog, who will serve as assistant captains.

• In its 95th season, Clarkson boasts 71 winning campaigns and a 1,402-840-151 all-time record for a .618 winning % since 1920-21.

• Four current Golden Knights have been selected in the NHL Draft – de Haas (2012 Detroit - 6th rd, 170), Terrance Amorosa (2013 Philadelphia - 5th rd, 189), Troy Josephs (2013 Pittsburgh - 7th rd, 209) and Kelly Summers (2014 Ottawa - 7th rd, 189).

Scouting Yale

Yale enters the tournament looking to break out of a four-game winless slide (0-3-1). The Bulldogs, guided by 12th-year head coach Keith Allain, own a 2-4-1 overall record and are in ninth place in the ECAC Hockey standings at 1-4-1 in conference play. This past weekend in the North Country, Yale gained one of a possible four league points after rallying for a 3-3 tie at Clarkson on Saturday. The night before in Canton, NY, the Bulldogs lost 5-2 at St. Lawrence. Yale's two wins this season were a 3-2 overtime triumph at RPI on November 5 and a 4-1 victory over Sacred Heart on October 29. John Hayden leads the Bulldogs in scoring with seven goals and two assists. Patrick Spano has started six games in the Yale crease and posts a .879 save percentage and a 3.32 goals against average.

Scouting Notre Dame

Notre Dame, guided by 12th-year head coach Jeff Jackson, is ranked 11/12th in the national polls with a 6-4-2 overall record. The Fighting Irish, in their last year of Hockey East play, are tied for third in their conference with a 3-2-1 league mark. Notre Dame hosted Hockey East foe, 5th-ranked UMass-Lowell this past Thursday and Friday, splitting the league series against the River Hawks. The Fighting Irish lost the first game 4-1 at Compton Family Arena, but came back and won the Friday night matchup 4-1. Notre Dame is 4-3-1 at home. Anders Bjork leads Notre Dame offensively with 20 points on eight goals and 12 assists. Cal Petersen has started all 12 games for the Fighting Irish and posts a .920 save percentage and a 2.20 goals against average with one shutout.

Scouting Holy Cross

Playing for the first time since November 12, Holy Cross, guided by fourth-year head coach David Berard, owns a 5-3-2 overall record and is tied for 8th in the Atlantic Hockey standings with a 2-2-2 conference mark. The Crusaders are 1-2-1 in their last four games. Holy Cross split with conference foe Mercyhurst on the road in its last games, defeating the Lakers 4-1 in Erie, PA on November 11 before losing the next night 4-2. The Lakers have won both their games against ECAC Hockey opponents, defeating Brown (3-0) and Union (6-4) in Worcester, MA in late October and early November. Mike Barrett leads Holy Cross with 14 points, including 11 assists. Paul Berrafato has started all 10 games for the Crusaders with a .897 save percentage and a 3.06 goals against average with one shutout.

The Series:

In the rivalry against Yale, which first began in in 1930, the Knights hold a commanding 72-38-7 lead. The teams are tied 1-1-3 over the past five games. The Bulldogs, who are on a current three-game unbeaten streak (1-0-2) in the series, came back to tie Clarkson 3-3 in Cheel Arena a week ago on November 19. The Knights came from behind to gain a 2-2 tie against the Bulldogs at Cheel on January 22. Clarkson's last win in the series was a 1-0 shutout in Potsdam on January 24, 2015. Yale's last win in the series was a 3-1 triumph in New Haven on February 20 last season. James de Haas (1-3), Brett Gervais (1-3) and Jordan Boucher (0-4) have a team-high four points each against the Bulldogs. A.J. Fossen and Aaron Thow both have two goals in the series. Jake Kielly made 33 saves on 36 shots in the 3-3 tie this past Saturday. Steve Perry has played two games in the series with a .875 save percentage, a 3.53 GAA and a 1-1 record.

Clarkson and Notre Dame have only faced off against each other twice, both early in the 1980-81 season. The Fighting Irish won the first meeting 4-1 on October 31, 1980 at the Onondaga War Memorial in Syracuse. The Knights came back and won the following night, 5-2 at the Rochester War Memorial in Rochester on November 1.

Clarkson and Holy Cross have also only played each other twice with both winning on the other's home ice. Clarkson shut out the Crusaders 5-0 in Worcester, MA in their inaugural meeting on November 27, 2011. The Crusaders came back the next season to post a 3-1 win over the Green and Gold at Cheel Arena on October 20, 2012.
