The first road trip of the season proved to be a tough test for the Clarkson University Hockey team, and despite several Grade A scoring opportunities the Golden Knights had to settle for a 2-2 tie through 65 minutes of play at Western Michigan in Kalamazoo on Friday night.

Clarkson, ranked 15th in the national polls, stands at 2-0-1, while the Broncos go to 2-1-1. Western Michigan scored a third goal in the second five-minute overtime session, but the game goes down as a tie in the record books. The two teams meet again at Lawson Arena on Saturday in an 8:05 p.m. start.

The line of center Nico Sturm (Augsburg, Germany), left wing Devin Brosseau (St. Lambert, QUE) and right wing Sheldon Rempal (Calgary, ALB) was all over the ice for the Green and Gold, accounting for both Clarkson scores. ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week, sophomore Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN) put in another standout effort in the crease making 29 saves.

The long bus ride out to the Midwest caught up to Clarkson early in Friday's game as the Broncos scored just 1:33 after the opening faceoff. After a big stop by Kielly, Dawson DiPietro was able to get a stick on a loose puck and slid in a shot during a scramble at the crease to give the home team the early momentum.

Although out shot 15-9 in the middle frame, the Knights scored the first two goals of the period to take a 2-1 lead. Rempal finished off a 2-on-1 with Brosseau at 2:03 for his first goal of the season. Senior defenseman Terrance Amorosa (Kirkland, QUE) started the scoring play to record his fourth assist of the season and team-high fifth point.

After a couple of strong penalty kills, including on a 1:37 of a two-man advantage for the Broncos early in the second, Clarkson connected for its second goal.

Brosseau finished off a flurry early in the Knights' second power play of the contest at 7:21 for his first goal of the season. Sturm and Rempal assisted.

Western Michigan came back to tie at 10:52 when DiPietro scored his second goal of the night, knocking a in a bouncing puck for a power-play tally.

Clarkson, which held a 34-31 shot advantage, came close to ending it late in regulation with several excellent scoring opportunities, but had to settle for the tie.

The Knights went 1-of-5 on the power play and killed off seven of the eight Bronco man-advantage chances.
