Clarkson men's hockey looks to extend winning streak

The Clarkson University Hockey team has put together an impressive run in the New Year. The Golden Knights, guided fifth-year head coach Casey Jones and assistants Phil Roy '00 and Josh Hauge, are one of the hottest teams in the country right now with a seven-game unbeaten streak (6-0-1), including victories in their past five games. Ranked 20th in the nation, Clarkson owns a 15-10-3 overall record and is within striking distance of a top four spot in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 7-6-3 league mark.

Winless in conference play during the 2015 portion of the schedule, the Knights have climbed out of the basement of the 12-team ECAC Hockey standings. With six games remaining in the regular season Clarkson is tied for seventh place in the league, just one point out of fourth. The Green and Gold face a stern test in Potsdam this weekend as they attempt to extend their season-long win streak. On Friday, Clarkson hosts a Princeton squad which has won two straight over the Knights, and then on Saturday the number one team in the nation, Quinnipiac, comes to town. The Knights own a 10-1-2 mark at Cheel Arena.

This past Friday and Saturday, Clarkson added to its winning ways with the program's first weekend sweep in New York's Capital District region since January 2001. The Knights skated past Union 4-1 on Friday and rallied for a 4-2 victory at 14th-ranked RPI on Saturday.

• Clarkson holds a decisive 79-31-5 lead in the all-time series against Princeton, which began in 1928.The Knights are 7-3 over the Tigers in their last 10 games, but have lost the last two meetings. Princeton handed Clarkson just its second shutout loss in the series with a 3-0 victory at Hobey Baker Rink in their first meeting this year on November 21. The Tigers also defeated the Green and Gold 2-1 in New Jersey on February 15 last season. Clarkson is 26-5 against Princeton at Cheel Arena, including a 4-0 win on November 22 last year.

• Quinnipiac leads the all-time series, which first started with a 4-0 Clarkson win in Northford, CT on February 8, 2000, 12-9-3. The teams have gone 1-1-2 in the past four meetings, including a 1-1 tie at High Points Solutions Arena on November 20. The teams split last season. Clarkson broke out of a seven-game winless skid against Quinnipiac with a 2-1 victory in Potsdam in the first meeting last year on November 21. The Bobcats skated to a 4-1 triumph on February 14, 2015.

• Clarkson, which has gone 8-2-1 in 2016, has put together its streak against some of the best teams in the country, posting a 5-0-1 mark against Top 20-ranked teams since January 3. The Green and Gold went 6-2-1 in the month of January (.722 win%), its best start to a New Year in eight seasons.

• The Knights have posted several significant victories during the season's second half. The Green and Gold began their surge with a 3-2 win at #12-ranked Bowling Green on January 3. Clarkson resumed ECAC Hockey play with a convincing 3-1 victory over archrival, #18 St. Lawrence at Cheel Arena on January 12. Clarkson handled #7 Harvard 5-1 in Cambridge, MA on January 16. The Knights knocked off #13 Cornell 2-1 in overtime at Cheel Arena on January 29 and followed with a 2-1 victory over Colgate the following night to complete a weekend sweep of the Central NY rivals for the first time since late February, 2001. This past weekend, Clarkson gained its first win in Schenectady since a March 6, 2005 playoff victory with a 4-1 triumph at Union. The Knights then capped off the road trip with a come-from behind 4-2 win at RPI, stunning the 14th-ranked Engineers at Houston Field House on their most celebrated home date of the season - Big Red Freakout, to complete their first weekend sweep in the Capital District since January 2001.

• Clarkson continues to get a balanced effort form its deep lineup. A different Golden Knight accounted for each of Clarkson's eight goals in the Capital District sweep. During the five-game winning streak 11 Knights have accounted for the 17 goals.

• The Knights are getting needed offense from the blueline with Clarkson defensemen scoring eight of the team's last 17 goals.

• Sophomore defenseman Terrance Amorosa (Kirkland, QUE) has scored three of the Knights' last four game-winners, including the deciding goal at RPI.

• Freshman defenseman Aaron Thow (Toronto, ONT) scored his first career goal for the game-winner at Union. He leads the team in plus/minus at +9

• Senior James de Haas (Mississauga, ONT) leads the Clarkson blueline in points with 13 on three goals and 10 assists.

• In the past 10 games the Knights have given up just 16 goals total (1.60 GPG) and have allowed over two goals in a game just once (5-2 loss at Dartmouth on January 15). Senior Greg Lewis (Mars, PA), who has started all of those games, boasts a .944 save percentage during that span. Through 15 games this season, including 14 starts, Lewis posts a .928 save percentage and rates 7th in Division I with a 1.84 goals against average. He owns a 9-4-2 record, including one shutout. Lewis equalled his career high for saves with 44 stops in the win at Union.

• Trailing 2-0 after two periods at RPI, Clarkson rallied with four, third-period goals to win its first game of the season when it was behind after 40 minutes (1-9-2). The Knights are 9-0-1 when leading through two periods and 9-0-2 when scoring first.

• Specialty teams play has been a key to Clarkson's recent success. The Knights have scored five times on 15 power plays (33%) over the past four games. The Green and Gold have displayed discipline with the opponents only being awarded nine man-advantage opportunities over the last five games, scoring just once (11%). For the season the Knights are 19.8% (19-96) on the power play and 83.7% on the penalty kill (77-92).

• All four goals in the win over RPI came from Clarkson's Class of 2018 – Ben Dalpe (Paris, ONT), Kelly Summers (Golden Lake, ONT), Amorosa and Sam Vigneault (Baie-Comeau, QUE).

• Vigneault leads the Knights offensively with 22 points on a team-high 10 goals and 12 assists through 26 games, and has scored a team-high five game-winners (tied for fourth in the nation). He has tallied five goals and eight points in his last nine games.

• Dalpe started the Knights' comeback at RPI with his second goal of the season early in the third period. He also set up Thow's game-winner at Union with a clean faceoff win back to the point. Dalpe won 22 draws on the weekend.

• Clarkson is tied with Boston College for the best home winning percentages in Division I at .846 with a 10-1-2, record and is unbeaten it is last seven games (6-0-1) at Cheel Arena.

Scouting Princeton

Princeton, guided by second-year head coach, and former Clarkson assistant (99-02), Ron Fogarty owns a 5-16-2 overall record and a 3-11-2, 11th-place ECAC Hockey mark. The Tigers are looking to break out of a four-game losing skid. This past weekend at Hobey Baker Rink Princeton was on the short end of a pair of one-goal games, losing to Colgate 5-4 and Cornell 1-0. Princeton has yet to win a conference game in 2016. The Tigers' last win was a 1-0 non-league victory over American International on January 26. Princeton is 2-9 in road games this season. Ryan Kuffner has a team-high 15 points, including 11 assists. Max Veronneau leads the Tigers with eight goals. Colton Phinney has started all 23 games with a .925 save percentage, a 2.81 goals against average and two shutouts.

Scouting Quinnipiac

Quinnipiac, guided by 22nd-year head coach Rand Pecknold, rolls into the North Country as the number-ranked team in the country with a 21-1-6 overall record, including a first-place 12-0-4 ECAC Hockey slate. The Bobcats' only loss this season was a 4-1 setback to Boston University in Hamden, CT on December 12. Unbeaten in its last 10 games, Quinnipiac has come close to falling for the second time this season, playing to four ties in the New Year. This past weekend at High Points Solution Arena, Quinnipiac skated to a 2-2 draw with Cornell before doubling up Colgate 6-3. The Bobcats, who play at St. Lawrence on Friday, are 9-0-2 in road games this season. Quinnipiac is strong offensively (3.82 GPG, 6th in NCAA) and defensively (1.79 GPG, 4th). Sam Anas (20-17) and Travis St. Denis (13-19) pace a balanced offensive effort with 37 and 32 points, respectively. Michael Garteig has started 27 games in the Quinnipiac crease and boasts a .931 save percentage and a 1.68 goals against average along with a seven shutouts (2nd in NCAA).

Paul Geiger leads the way offensively with six points, including five assists against Princeton. Jeff DiNallo has five points on two goals and three assists. James de Haas is the only other Knight with multiple goals (2) in the series. Steve Perry is 4-1 against the Tigers with two shutouts on a .939 save percentage and a 1.61 goals against average. Through five games in the series, Greg Lewis holds a .912 save percentage and a 1.93 GAA en route to a 3-2 record.

Greg Lewis is 0-3-1 in four games against the Bobcats and holds a .898 save percentage and a 3.16 GAA.
