The struggles for the Clarkson University Hockey team against Union College continued on Saturday night as the Dutchmen handed the 17th-ranked Golden Knights their first loss, 4-1, at Cheel Arena this season.

Union scored twice in the first period, added a third goal in the middle frame and tallied late in the final stanza to pick up its first ECAC Hockey win of the season, while also gaining its sixth straight win in the series against Clarkson.

Clarkson stands at 5-2-1 overall and 0-1-1 in ECAC Hockey.

The Dutchmen (3-4-3, 1-3-0) held a slim 29-28 shot margin, but controlled play for much of the contest.

Union dominated in the opening 20 minutes, outshooting the Green and Gold 15-8, and grabbed a 2-0 lead. Eli Lichtenwald started the scoring at 14:07 when he took pass in the slot from Brett Supinski and scored in front for his second goal of the season. At 17:17, defenseman Jeff Taylor fired in a blast from just inside the blueline for his first tally of the year.

Late in the second stanza the Dutchmen built their lead to 3-0 when Spencer Foo took a pass from Sebastien Gingras at center ice, skated along the left boards and then cut across the slot where he slipped in a low shot past Clarkson goaltender, junior Steve Perry at 16:65.

Union sealed the deal with an empty-net tally by Foo at 17:44 of the third.

The Knights' averted the shutout with sophomore Perry D'Arrisso's first goal of the season with 1:32 remaining. Freshman defenseman Aaron Thow and sophomore Janick Asselin assisted.

Perry, who was pulled for the extra attacker with 5:50 remaining in the game, finished with 25 stops.

Alex Sakellaropoul made 27 saves for the Dutchmen.

Clarkson was 0-of-3 on the power play and killed off all four of Union's man-advantage opportunities.

The Knights, who tied RPI 2-2 on Friday, will look to get back on the winning track with next Friday's game against North Country rival St. Lawrence University in Canton.
