The opening weekend of ECAC Hockey action did not go as plan for the Clarkson University Hockey team, which managed just one point in a weekend set at Cheel Arena. The Golden Knights, however, will have the opportunity to gain back their early-season momentum when they take on archrival St. Lawrence University in Canton on Friday in a 7:00 p.m. game at Appleton Arena.

After posting a 5-1 record against non-league competition, for its best start in 24 years, Clarkson, guided by fifth-year head coach Casey Jones and assistants Phil Roy '00 and Josh Hauge, struggled in its conference openers. The Green and Gold battled back for a 2-2 tie against Rensselaer on Friday, then lost 4-1 to Union on Saturday. Ranked 19th in the national polls, the Knights own a 5-2-1 overall record and are tied for 10th in the ECAC Hockey standings at 0-1-1.

• Friday's game will be the 200th meeting between Clarkson and St. Lawrence in their rivalry, which the Knights lead by a commnading 121-67-11 margin. Last season St. Lawrence enjoyed the better of the rivalry going 2-1-1. The teams split in ECAC Hockey action, however, with each winning on the other's home ice.

No player on the current Clarkson roster has ever lost a game at Appleton Arena. The Knights have a five-game unbeaten (4-0-1) streak on St. Lawrence's home ice. Clarkson defeated the Saints 2-1 in Canton on December 6 and also tied the Saints at Appleton 2-2 on October 31 last season.

• Friday's game is the only one on the weekend for the Knights and starts a three-game road trip. Clarkson split in its only two road games of the season, losing at Merrimack (7-1) before defeating UNH (4-3) on October 16-17. Clarkson plays at Quinnipiac and Princeton on November 20-21.

• After outscoring its opponents 20-5 through the first six games en route to a 5-1 record and its best start since 1991-92, Clarkson was held in check to open ECAC Hockey play, combining for just three goals over the weekend.

• The Knights' power play, which entered the weekend as the fourth best unit in the country (34.6%) went 0-for-6 combined against the Engineers and Dutchmen. The penalty kill was a perfect 7-of-7. For the season, Clarkson is 9-32 (28.1%) with the man-advantage (6th in the country), while the penalty kill is 28-33 (84.8%, tied for 26th).

• Senior defenseman Paul Geiger (Stouffville, ONT) is in his second year as the Golden Knights' captain. Classmates Jeff DiNallo (Aurora, ONT) and Pat Megannety (Oakville, ONT), and junior James de Haas (Mississauga, ONT) serve as assistant captains.

• Clarkson's offense is tied for the 15th most productive in Division I, averaging 3.50 goals per game. The Knights have scored four-or-more goals in each of their five wins and have had a pair of six-goal outings. Clarkson has scored 28 goals through the first eight games after finding the back of the net just 81 times through 37 games (2.19 GPG) last season.

He is the Knights' leading goal scored (5) and is tied for second in points with seven.

• Sophomore Sam Vigneault (Baie-Comeau, QUE) is tied for fourth in the country in game-winning goals (2) and tied for 18th in power-play markers (2). Vigneault is one of three Knights with seven points (2-5) on the year.
