Sophomore Corey Herrington (Camillus, NY) paced a balanced offensive effort by the Clarkson University Lacrosse team on Sunday afternoon with a two-goal, three-assist outing as the Golden Knights greatly improved their chances for a Liberty League postseason bid by defeating Skidmore College 15-8 in conference play at Hantz Turf Field.

Clarkson, which has won four of its last five games, improves its record to 8-4 overall and to 3-2 in the Liberty League. The Green and Gold play at national powerhouse Cortland State next Saturday in a non-league contest and then close out the regular season on April 27 with a conference matchup against Vassar in Potsdam.

Eleven different Knights scored goals in the win over Skidmore (4-8, 2-2) as Clarkson enjoyed its most productive offensive outing of the season. Junior Peter Goss (Jamesville, NY) and sophomores Matthew Gold (Pittsford, NY) and Jack Dowst (Weare, NH) also scored two goals in the victory.

Clarkson overcame a quick second-half start by Skidmore by scoring eight unanswered goals to take control of the game. Trailing by one at the break, the Thoroughbreds opened the second half with two quick scores as Matt Ohara and J. P. Sullivan scored in the opening two minutes to give the visitors their only lead of the game at 7-6.

The Knights then stormed back with Gold scoring a man-up goal to start the run, tying the game with 12:38 remaining in the quarter. Sophomore Mark Nortz (Lowville, NY) put Clarkson ahead for good just over a minute later. The Knights scored three more times in the quarter to hold a 12-7 lead through 45 minutes.

Goss tallied twice to start the final frame, giving Clarkson a 14-7 lead with 8:42 left. Dowst closed out the scoring with the Knights’ 15th goal with 2:11 remaining.

Clarkson outshot Skidmore 51-34 and held a 28-16 advantage in ground balls. Senior Ryan Cole (Orchard Park, NY) made 13 saves through 58 minutes, setting the Knights' all-time career save mark with 556 saves since the 2010 season. Rob Meenan (1993-96) held the old mark at 547. Sophomore Harrison Washuta (Maple Grove, MN) posted one saves over the final two minutes.

The Knights went 3-of-7 in man-up situations. Sophomore Dylan Broomfield (Clinton, NY) was strong on the X, winning 18-of-24 face-offs and picking up a game-high 13 ground balls.

Herrington got Clarkson off to a quick start by scoring the game’s first two goals in the opening three minutes. Junior defenseman Rick Clement (Cotuit, MA) made it 3-0 with his first goal of the season with 10:20 remaining in the first quarter. Senior Jamie Stuhlinger (New Hartford, MA) scored a man-up goal as the Knights took a 4-2 lead after the opening 15 minutes.

Senior Matt McCabe (Syracuse, NY) gave Clarkson a 5-2 advantage to start the second, but Skidmore tallied three unanswered goals, two coming off the stick of J. P. Sullivan to tie the game with 6:14 remaining before the half. With 2:41 remaining before the break, junior James Wright (Cazenovia, NY) scored his first of the year to give the Knights a 6-5 edge heading into the break.

Senior Brendon Shearin (Goffstown, NH) and junior Jeff Sciera (DeWitt, NY) also scored for the Knights.

Sullivan led the Thoroughbreds with three goals, while Mike Perlow scored twice. Matt posted 16 saves in the Skidmore net.

Skidmore is back in action on Tuesday, hosting Middlebury.
