A lengthy winning streak came to an end for the Clarkson University Lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon as the Golden Knights were held to a season low in goals in a 6-4 loss to Union College in Liberty League action at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights, who saw their winning streak come to an end at five games with their first conference defeat of the year, stand at 8-5 overall and 4-1 in the Liberty League. Clarkson, which is tied for first in the league standings, closes out the regular season next Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. game at Liberty League foe Skidmore College, which also shares the conference lead.

Union, which can also claim the Liberty League regular-season title, owns a 9-3 overall record and a 3-1 conference mark. The Dutchmen, who have won three straight, close out the regular season playing at Vassar on Wednesday and hosting Rensselaer next Saturday.

Union never trailed against the Knights and jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first quarter. Clarkson was able to tie it up 3-3 at the half with a pair of second-quarter goals from junior Bryan Huff (Hillsborough, NJ).

The Dutchmen regained the advantage in the third quarter as Nate Greenberg and Ethan Meyer sandwiched goals around a score by Clarkson sophomore Jeff Sciera (DeWitt, NY) to give the visitors a 5-4 edge.

Union’s leading scorer, Rob Santangelo, who opened the contest with the game’s first goal, sealed the Dutchmen victory with his 18th goal of the season, scoring early in the final stanza to make it 6-4.

Huff and Santangelo shared the game-lead in goals with two apiece. Junior Eric Gollands (Chelmsford, MA) also scored for Clarkson.

The Dutchmen outshot the Green and Gold 41-31 and held a slight edge in groundballs, 26-24.

Sophomore Ryan Cole (Orchard Park, NY) posted nine saves for the Knights, while Sean Aaron made 15 stops for the Dutchmen. Senior Mike Perkins (Baldwinsville, NY) played a strong game on the Clarkson defense with a team-high four groundballs and three caused turnovers.
