Spencerport, NY - Junior Brendon Shearin (Goffstown, NH) finished off a strong week with five goals on Saturday, as the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team defeated the College of Brockport 14-10 in non-league action.
The Golden Knights improved to 3-0 on the season, having outscored their opponents 44-21 through the three contests. Brockport fell to 1-3.
Clarkson jumped out early with three goals and held a 5-2 advantage through the first quarter, but the Golden Eagles tacked on a pair of goals early in the second to close the gap to just one score. However, Clarkson ran off five straight goals in the final 10 minutes of the second quarter and held an 11-5 edge at the half, scoring on all but seven of their 18 first-half shots. The Knights were able to maintain a solid lead throughout the remainder of the contest, with Brockport tacking on four of the final five goals, including the last two in the waning minutes, to provide a smaller margin.
Shearin scored five goals coming off the bench as Clarkson had nine goals total come from non-starters. Senior Matt Cyr (Cheshire, CT) kicked in three goals, also off the bench as a key reserve, and Kyle Kasprzyk (Orchard Park, NY) scored twice. Bryan Huff (Hillsborough, NJ) scored a goal and assisted on two others, while Matt McCabe (Syracuse, NY), Corey Flanigan (Rochester, NY), and Jack Keenan (Brasher Falls, NY) each scored once. Freshman Corey Herrington (Camillus, NY), the team's leading goal scorer through two games, was held scoreless, but assisted on three others to maintain his status as the team's leading point-provider.
Jack Keenan led the team with nine groundballs and won 10 faceoffs for the Knights, while Flanigan also picked up five groundballs for Clarkson. Ryan Cole (Orchard Park, NY) made 13 saves in the game, picking up his third victory of the season.
Brockport led in shots (34-33) and groundballs (36-29). Jesse Elliot was the Golden Eagles top performer with four goals and an assist, while Nate Thomas picked up 10 groundballs. Cory Banwaree and Jason Baetzhold split time in the Brockport net, combining for 14 saves.
