Clarkson hosts Liberty League Cross Country Championships, takes 5th and 6th

Potsdam, NY – With a combined score of just 40 across two races, the St. Lawrence University Cross Country men’s and women’s teams repeated as Liberty League Cross Country title winners on Saturday afternoon at Clarkson University’s newly christened Munter Trails along the Raquette River on the east side of campus.

St. Lawrence won the men’s 8,000-meter event with a low-score of 21, followed by Rensselaer (50), Vassar (71), RIT (118), Clarkson (136), Union (152), Hobart (231), and Bard (250). In the women’s race, the Saints reduced their scored by two to 19, with Rensselaer (61), and Vassar (99) rounding out the top three, and RIT (105), William Smith (142), Clarkson (147), Union (204), and Bard (260) closing out the eight-team 6,000-meter women's race.

Senior Sam Rakoc of St. Lawrence won the men’s race with a time of 25 minutes, 35 seconds, pacing the field by 12 seconds with an average mile time of 5:10. Teammate Sam Smolensky was next at 25:47, narrowly beating out Vassar’s Sam Wagner by two seconds. Brendan Courneene and Spencer Patterson of St. Lawrence rounded out the top five.

For Clarkson, junior Dan Fritz (Cicero, NY) was the top runner, taking 16th place among the 131 runners in 26:22. Senior Andrew Gelston (White Plains, NY) and classmate Patrick Carroll (Queensbury, NY) were closely paced in 26th and 29th, respectively. Junior Adam Merkwan (Meredith, NH) took 43rd and freshman Michael Feeney (Lockport, NY) came in 49th.

In the women’s race, St. Lawrence junior Amy Cymerman won in a tightly-packed top four which was separated by nine seconds. Cymerman crossed the finish line in 21:43 with Grace Tilton of Rensselaer finishing four seconds later. St. Lawrence freshman Ella Martin was third in 21:49 and Margaret McDonald, another freshman runner for the Saints, took fourth in 21:52. St. Lawrence sophomore Anne Martino out ran the next cluster to finish fifth in 22:34.

Sophomore Sarah Governale (Wading River, NY) finished in 13th place in 23:04 to pace the Golden Knights’ competitors and senior Rachel Bachman (Queensbury, NY) took 23rd 50 seconds later. Junior Catherine Zarnofsky (Glenville, NY) finished 38th while Chelsea Farinacci (Huntington, NY) and Meaghan McKenna (Hamburg, NY) rounded out Clarkson’s scoring by taking 56th and 61st, respectively.

The top seven runners in each race earned Liberty League First-Team All-Star status, while the next seven runners in each event gained Liberty League Second-Team All-Star mention.
