Clarkson falls in overtime at Colgate

The Clarkson University Hockey team’s bid to come away with a point in ECAC Hockey play on the road was denied by Colgate University on Saturday evening as the Raiders came away with a 5-4 overtime victory at Starr Rink in Hamilton, NY, scoring the winning goal with just 36 seconds remaining in the extra session.

The Golden Knights, who suffered a double dip in Central NY over the weekend, losing 3-1 at Cornell on Friday, fall to 2-7-5 overall and to 2-3-1 in ECAC Hockey play. Clarkson jumps right back into action on Wednesday with conference play at archrival St. Lawrence. The Knights and Saints meet again on Saturday Clarkson displayed a balanced offensive effort against Colgate (7-7-2, 3-4-1) with four different players scoring goals and nine Knights recording a point.

Trailing 3-1 early in the second period, Clarkson struck for three goals in a span of 3:06 late in the period to take a 4-3 lead at 14:13 of the stanza. The Raiders, however, came back to tie with their third power-play tally of the game with 52 seconds remaining in the period to make it a 4-4 game through 40 minutes.

After a scoreless third period, the Knights went into their sixth overtime contest of the season, but Colgate snapped the Green and Gold’s string of extra-session ties when Robbie Bourdon connected for the game-winner at 4:14.

Clarkson, playing its third straight road game, took the early lead on sophomore Sam Labrecque’s (Granby, QUE) unassisted goal on a shot from the left circle at 5:31. Colgate answered back with a power-play marker from Spiro Goulakos at 9:06.

The Raiders added two more goals early in the second with Tylor Spink and Goulakos, with his second power-play tally of the game, completing a three-goal run for the home team.

The Knights went back on top with their three-goal spurt. Sophomore Joe Zarbo (Grand Island, NY) jammed in a rebound at 11:07 for his second goal of the weekend and career-high fifth of the season. Junior Will Frederick (Allison Park, PA) followed with his second goal of the year at 12:21 to tie the game at 3-3. Freshman Jeff DiNallo (Aurora, ONT) put Clarkson on top with his first career goal, knocking in a rebound off a shot by senior defenseman Andrew Himelson (Monroe, NY) at 14:13.

Colgate enjoyed the better of the specialty teams’ situations, going 3-of-6 on the power play. The Knights had just one abbreviated power-play opportunity.

Colgate outshot the Knights 39-20 and dominated in the third period and overtime, outshooting the Green and Gold 18-2, including a 6-0 margin in the extra session.

Freshman Greg Lewis (Mars, PA) finished with 34 stops.
