Clarkson men's lax posts balanced 16-7 victory over Vassar on Senior Day

The Clarkson University Lacrosse team celebrated “Senior Day” in style on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field with a convincing 16-7 victory over Liberty League foe Vassar College in the final game of the regular season.

The Golden Knights, who own a 9-5 overall record, finished with a 4-2, third-place mark in the conference. Clarkson, guided by 25th-year head coach Bill Bergan,will open Liberty League postseason action on Friday, May 3 with a semifinal game at archrival St. Lawrence University in Canton.

Sophomore Corey Herrington (Camillus, NY) paced the Green and Gold offensively against Vassar (3-11, 0-6) with a game-high seven points, including four goals. Classmate Matthew Gold (Pittsford, NY) tallied two goals and two assists.

Senior Shane Martin (Camillus, NY), playing in his final career regular-season game, scored his first two goals as a Golden Knight. Junior James Wright (Cazenovia, NY) also scored twice.

Clarkson led from the start against the Brewers and held a 5-0 first-quarter lead. The Green and Gold made it 7-0 before Vassar scored its first goal with 11:02 left in the half. The Knights added four more goals to build a comfortable 11-1 advantage through the opening 30 minutes.

The Brewers outscored Clarkson 2-1 in the third quarter, while both teams put four more goals apiece on the scoreboard in the final period.

The Knights held an overwhelming 62-17 advantage in shots and controlled ground balls 38-14. Clarkson, behind the solid play at the “X” by sophomore Dylan Broomfield (Clinton, NY) won 19-of-25 faceoffs. Broomfield, who won 10-of-12 draws, scooped up a game-high eight ground balls.

Senior Ryan Cole (Orchard Park, NY) picked up the win in goal by making three first-half saves on four shots. Sophomore Harrison Washuta (Maple Grove, MN) posted four saves on seven shots in 24 minutes of play in the second half. Freshman Garth Buck (Bridport, VT) made one save over the final six minutes of action for the Knights.

Seniors Jeff Sciera (DeWitt, NY), Jamie Stuhlinger (New Hartford, NY) and Matt McCabe (Syracuse, NY), along with junior Peter Goss (Jamesville, NY), sophomore Tyler Tomeny (Marcellus, NY) and freshmen Daniel Duffy (Wakefield, RI) scored one goal apiece to round out a balanced effort by Clarkson, which saw all 39 dressed players see action in the game.

Noah Parsons and Sean Brazier led Vassar with two goals each.
