Clarkson drops final game before the break, 6-4 at MSU

Junior Pat Megannety (Oakville, ONT) scored two g­­­oals to highlig­­­ht one of the Clarkson University Hockey team's most productive offensive outings of the season, but unfortunately the Golden Knights allowed their most goals of the year as they fell on the road to Michigan State 6-4 at Munn Arena in East Lansing, MI on Sunday evening.

Clarkson, which is now off for 16 days, closes out the first semester with a 6-8-4 overall record. The Knights return to action when they host American International at Cheel Arena on December 30 in the final game of 2014. ECAC Hockey play resumes for the Green and Gold on January 9 with a home game against Colgate.

Michigan State (6-9-1) outshot Clarkson 31-24 and enjoyed the better of the specialty teams play. The Knights were scoreless on their only two power plays, while the Spartans scored three of their goals on eight man-advantage opportunities.

The game started off well for the Green and Gold, who scored first and took a 2-1 lead after the opening 20 minutes.

Megannety scored his second of the year midway through the first. Skating in on a 2-on-1 Megannety fired in a hard shot blocker-side high at 10:06. Freshman Brett Gervais (Corona, CA) assisted.

In a 4-4 situation, the Spartans tied the game at with three minutes left in the stanza when Michael Ferrantino knocked in a rebound, but the Knights came back with a late goal to take the lead into intermission.

With 19 seconds remaining in the opening period, sophomore Troy Josephs (Whitby, ONT) took a pass in front from captain, junior defenseman Paul Geiger (Stouffville, ONT) to put the Green and Gold back on top. Junior Christian Powers (Carlisle, ONT) also assisted.

Michigan State took the game over in the second period, outscoring Clarkson 4-1.

Shortly into its fourth power-play opportunity of the game, Michigan State tied the score when Matt DeBlouw connected on a shot from the right point at 7:59.

Megannety collected his second of the game, knocking in a rebound off a shot by junior defenseman Kevin Tansey (Hammond. ONT) at 12:15 to give Clarkson a 3-2 lead. Freshman Sam Vigneault (Baie-Comeau, QUE) also assisted.

The Spartans then took control with three goals in a span of 3:13. Joe Cox scored a breakaway goal at 14:21 to get things rolling for the home team.

Michigan State was awarded a five-minute power play after the goal and took full advantage to the major penalty to Clarkson, scoring twice of the lengthy man-advantage to take a commanding 5-3 lead after 40 minutes. Cox put the Spartans on top for the first time in the game with scored his second goal of the night at 16:12, followed by Thomas Ebbing's tally at 17:34.

Clarkson came out with a strong third-period effort and pulled to within one with junior Todd Christian's (Norwalk, CT) second goal of the year at 7:30 of the third after a faceoff win by Josephs to cut the Knights' deficit to one goal at 5-4.

The Spartans, however, sealed the home win with a goal by Ryan Keller at 14:29.

Sophomore Ville Runola (Raisio, Finland) started in the Clarkson goal and made 19 saves through the first two periods. Junior Greg Lewis (Mars, PA) saw his first action of the season in the Clarkson goal, playing the final 20 minutes and made six saves on seven shots.
