National powerhouse Yale proved too much for the Clarkson University Hockey team to handle on Saturday night as the second-ranked Bulldogs skated to a 6-3 ECAC Hockey victory before 2,173 fans at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights, who stand at 13-14-2 overall, will play at archrival St. Lawrence University this Tuesday in a 7:30 p.m. game in Canton. With five regular-season game remaining, Clarkson holds down eighth place in the league standings with a 7-9-1 ECAC Hockey mark.

Coming off a 4-1 win over Brown on Friday, things started out well on Saturday for the Golden Knights who took the early opening lead against Yale (20-5-0, 14-4-0). Just 2:39 into the first, junior Julien Cayer (Lonqueuil, QUE) knocked in a rebound in the slot off of a shot by freshman defenseman Alex Boak (Norwood, NY) for his second goal of the season.

After that, the Green and Gold were called for four consecutive penalties and the Bulldogs’ fourth-ranked power-play unit took advantage. Yale closed out the first with a 16-6 shot advantage and a 3-1 lead. Thirty-three seconds into their second power play of the game, the Bulldogs tallied on Brian O’Neill’s backhand shot at 10:12. Yale’s Chad Ziegler followed 1:32 later to give the visitors the lead. With just two seconds left in its third man-advantage of the period, Brendan Mason scored to give Yale the two-goal lead at 16:57.

Yale extended its margin to 5-1 midway through the second period on a pair of goals by O’Neill. At 7:40, O’Neill fired a quick shot from the bottom of the right circle for his second goal of the game, and then connected again from the right circle at 10:39 to complete the hat trick with his 15th goal of the season.

The Knights got back on the scoreboard late in the stanza. Senior Scott Freeman (Whitby, ONT) finished off assists from senior defenseman Tom Pizzo (Rochester, NY) and junior Jake Morley (Ogdensburg, NY) at 17:37 for his eighth goal of the year, cutting the Yale lead to 5-2 after 40 minutes.

The Bulldogs did not let up in the final frame, and made it 6-2 with Mason’s second goal of the game and fourth of the season at 5:57.

Freshman Jarrett Burton (Echo Bay, ONT) closed out the scoring with Clarkson’s third goal, finishing off assists from senior defenseman Dan Reed (Walworth, NY) and sophomore Adam Pawlick (Utica, NY) at 14:12.

Yale outshot Clarkson 37-25. Junior Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ONT) started in the Knights’ net and made 16 saves on 21 shots through 30 minutes of action. Classmate Richie LaVeau (Arlington Heights, IL) played the final 30 minutes for Clarkson and turned aside 15 of the 16 shots he faced.

Clarkson was 0-of-3 on the power play, while the Bulldogs went 2-of-5 with the man-advantage.
