Plattsburgh, NY - Junior Dan Fritz (Cicero, NY) and Sarah Governale (Wading River, NY) led the Clarkson University Cross Country team as the Golden Knights kicked off the 2012 season at the Plattsburgh Invitational.
The Golden Knights' men finished third among the three teams with 65 points, with St. Lawrence (23) and Plattsburgh State (50) leading the Green and Gold, while the women also were third among the three teams with 80 points, trailing St. Lawrence (17) and Plattsburgh (41).
Fritz paced the Knights in the 5,000-meter men's race with a time of 16:48.9, good enough for 11th place among 53 runners. Senior Andrew Gelston (White Plains, NY) was 14th for the Knights in 17:04.5, and the final three runners which closed out Clarkson's scoring were bunched together, with Adam Merkwan (Meredith, NH) taking 17th, sophomore Austin Holbrook (Corning, NY) coming in 18th, and freshman John Bell (Marcellus, NY) finishing in 21st.
The women's race was also a 5,000-meter event, with sophomore Sarah Governale taking the top spot for Clarkson with a 12th-place showing in 20:12.2. Senior Rachel Bachman (Queensbury, NY) came in 18th in 20:53.6 and freshman Ashley Forshey (Scotia, NY) took 21st in 21:44.2. Juniors Catherine Zarnofsky (Glenville, NY) and Fiona Recchia (Lathom, NY) finished back-to-back in 25th and 26th, place respectively, to round out Clarkson's scoring.
