The 2014-15 campaign came to a close for the Clarkson University Hockey team on Sunday night as Rensselaer defeated the Golden Knights 3-1 in the deciding Game 3 of their first-round series at Cheel Arena.

Clarkson, which won Game 2 5-0 on Saturday, closed out season with a 12-20-5 overall record.

RPI opened the series with a Game 1 3-2 victory on Friday. The Engineers, who stand at 12-24-3, play at St. Lawrence in the quarterfinal round next weekend in Canton.

RPI jumped out to a 3-0 first-period lead on Sunday. The Engineers got things rolling with two goals in a span of 20 seconds with Mark Miller, connecting at 7:45 followed by Zach Schroeder at 8:05. RPI tacked on another goal with Jimmy DeVito scoring at 16:12.

Clarkson pressured in the middle frame, outshooting the visitors 9-3 in the period, but could not get on the scoreboard. The Knights continued to attack in the third stanza and finally found the back of the net at 17:06 with an extra-attacker goal by senior Joe Zarbo (Grand Island, NY), his team-high 12th goal of the season. Sophomore A.J. Fossen (Maple Grove, MN) and freshman Sam Vigneault (Baie-Comeau, QUE) assisted.

The Knights pulled junior goaltender Greg Lewis (Mars, PA) for the extra attacker with 6:49 left, but could only come up with the one score.

Clarkson outshot RPI 34-20. The Knights went 0-of-5 on the power play and killed off all four of the Engineers' man-advantage opportunities.

Sophomore Steve Perry (Ligonier, PA) started in the Clarkson net and made seven saves on three shots through 16 minutes of action. Lewis played the final 38 minutes and turned aside all 10 shots he faced.
