Potsdam, NY - Sophomore Sam Zwierzchowski (East Amherst, NY) finished in the top five in two events on Saturday to help the Clarkson University Swimming team to a second-place showing at the annual North Country Invitational.
The Golden Knights' men finished in second place with 384 points, behind only Oneonta State, while the women took sixth place with 110 points.
Zwierzchowski started the day with a long-time effort in the 1650 freestyle, finishing in fourth place in 18:22.34. He also placed in fifth place in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:18.39.
Several other swimmers had top-five finishes for Clarkson. Junior Tyler Nichols (Baldwinsville, NY) came in fifth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 4:42.07, and later in the day Nick Short (Endwell, NY) placed third in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:07.80. Kyle Hancock (Essex, VT) also took third in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:17.99, and junior Al Catano (Ronkonkoma, NY) had the best finish of the day, placing second in the 100 backstroke in 53.72 seconds.
Clarkson had a second place finish in the 200 medley relay, as the team was led by Catano and Hancock and anchored by Short and Sam Zagrobelny (East Aurora, NY). The 400 freestyle relay was led by Hancock, Chris Bay (Greene, NY), Zagrobelny and Catano in 3:22.14, good enough for fourth place.
Clarkson's top finisher among the women was freshman Sarah Halstead (MIlford, NH) who placed fifth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:06.64.
