Auburndale, FL - Through the first three innings Monday, the Clarkson University Baseball team was even with national-power Cortland State. In the fourth, however, the wheels came off as the Golden Knights' defense abandoned them and the Red Dragons took advantage en route to a 16-1 win at Lake Myrtle Main.
The Golden Knights fell to 2-3 overall and will look to rebound against Albright in a doubleheader on Tuesday. Cortland State improved to 5-4.
The Red Dragons plated one in the first inning, but Clarkson came back with a run in the top of the second when Justin McInerney (Grand Island, NY) doubled to center field to lead off the inning. Two batters later Dan Lenney (Clifton Park, NY) lifted a fly ball to left for a sacrifice toscore McInerney.
Unfortunately, the single run was all that Clarkson would get. Cortland scored five unearned runs in the fourth thanks to three errors, but the Red Dragons added seven in the fifth to create the rout.
Clarkson produced just five hits in the game. Besides McInerney, Jerry Coleman (Potsdam, NY), David Kinney (Mexico, NY), Lenney, and Garrett Russell (Lake George, NY) each added singles.
