Strong hitting helped the Clarkson University Baseball team sweep a Sunday doubleheader with the University of Rochester and take three out of four games this weekend.

Clarkson improves to 20-6 overall and is 13-5 in the Liberty League while Rochester is 24-11 and has a 15-11 Liberty League record.

In the first game, Clarkson would jump out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when a single by junior Greg Jasek scored senior John Coleman. Rochester would tie the game with a run in the top of the third, but in the bottom half, a Jasek ground out scored Coleman to make it 2-1. Rochester would score again in the top of the fourth to once again tie it up. However, in the bottom of the fifth, the Golden Knights would break the game open. First a bases-loaded single by freshman Will Coleman scored senior Matt Jenack to make it 3-2. Then a sacrifice fly by senior Nolan Driscoll brought home sophomore Chris Miller. Jasek advanced to third on Driscoll's fly out and then stole home to make the score 5-2. Finally, senior Tim Beninati doubled down the left field line to score Will Coleman for the final run of the game. Will Coleman pitched all seven innings, allowing just two runs on five hits to pick up his fourth win of the season.

In the second game, Rochester scored in the first inning to make it 1-0, but Clarkson came right back with three runs in the bottom of the first. Rochester scored two runs in the top of the second, but a triple by John Coleman and a single by Miller scored two more Clarkson runs in the bottom of the inning to make the score 5-3 after two innings. The Yellowjackets got within one run by scoring once in the top of the fourth, but junior Anthony Padrazo's double in the sixth scored classmate Paul Ludden to make it 6-4 and then a bases-loaded walk to Ludden in the bottom of the seventh scored Miller to make it 7-4. Rochester threatened in the top of the eighth, scoring two runs and getting the tying run to third, but a double play allowed the Golden Knights to escape with a 7-6 lead that would end up being the final score. Sophomore Dom Pirro started the game on the mound, pitching four innings and giving up four runs on five hits. Junior Jamie Terry pitched the next three and one third innings, allowing two runs on three hits and notching his first win this year. Freshman Andrew Smith pitched the final one and two thirds innings and did not allow any runs or hits to pick up his first collegiate save.

Clarkson will play four games with St.Lawrence next weekend, with the first two on Saturday at St. Lawrence, while the two games on Sunday will be at home at Jack Phillips Stadium.
