Troy, NY - In an elimination game in the Liberty League tournament, the Clarkson University Baseball team fell short as they lost to RPI 10-3 on Friday afternoon at Robison Field.
Clarkson is now 24-9 on the season while RPI is 24-15. The 24 wins for the Green and Gold are the third highest total in Clarkson history. If Clarkson wants to add to that total, they will have to hope for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Clarkson got on the board first with a run in the top of the first inning. First, junior Greg Jasek doubled down the right field line, the third double of the tournament for Jasek. Freshman Will Coleman followed with a single to score Jasek and make it 1-0. After that it would be all RPI though. The Engineers tied the game with a run in the bottom of the second, and then took the lead with two runs in the third and three more in the fourth. Another run in the fifth gave RPI a 7-1 lead.
Clarkson cut into the lead with two runs in the sixth. Will Coleman reached on an error and then a double by sophomore Dom Pirro placed runners on second and third with one out. Senior Nolan Driscoll's groundout scored Coleman and then senior Tim Beninati singled to plate Pirro. That would be all the Golden Knights got however, and RPI added a run in the seventh and two in the eighth for a final score of 10-3.
Junior Joe Rooney started the game for Clarkson and pitched three innings, allowing five runs on six hits. Junior Anthony Padrazo pitched the next three and surrendered three runs on five hits. Sophomore Jeremy Barber closed the game out, pitching two innings and allowing two runs on two hits.
