Clarkson alum Willie Mitchell named captain of Florida Panthers

Sunrise, FL- Clarkson University Hockey alumn Willie Mitchell has been named Captain of the National Hockey League's Florida Panthers for the 2014-15 season, the organization announced on Monday.

Florida Panthers Head Coach Gerard Gallant announced today that D Willie Mitchell has been named captain for the 2014-15 season. He joins Brian Skrudland (1993-1997), Scott Mellanby (1997-2001), Paul Laus/Pavel Bure (2001-2002), Olli Jokinen (2005-2008), Bryan McCabe (2009-2011) and Ed Jovanovski (2013-2014) as the other team captains in the club's 21-year history.

Mitchell, 37, has played in 795 career National Hockey League games for New Jersey (1999-2001), Minnesota (2000-2006), Dallas (2005-2006), Vancouver (2006-2010) and Los Angeles (2010-2014), scoring 30 goals with 135 assists and 744 penalty minutes. He has played in 89 post-season games, registering 16 points (4-12-16), winning the Stanley Cup twice with Los Angeles in 2012 and 2014.

Mitchell served as captain of the Wild in January of 2006 during Minnesota's rotating captaincy as well as an alternate captain in Vancouver.

The Port McNeill, British Columbia native, was selected by the New Jersey Devils in the eighth round (199th overall) in the 1996 NHL Draft and becomes the eighth captain in Panthers history. Florida signed Mitchell to a two-year contact on July 1, 2014.

Mitchell skated in 68 games for the Golden Knights, recording 55 points from the blueline on 19 goals and 36 assists. He was named ECAC Co-Rookie of the Year, along with Cole, in 1997-98 and earned First-Team ECAC All-Star honors and Second-Team Titan All-America accolades in 1998-99.

He was selected by New Jersey in the eighth round (199th overall) in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. Mitchell began his NHL career with the Devils in the 1999-2000 campaign, and played 18 games in New Jersey before being traded to Minnesota on March 4, 2001. He played parts of five seasons for the Wild from 2001-2006 before a trade to Dallas on March 9, 2006. Mitchell was signed as a free agent by Vancouver on July 1, 2006 and joined the LA organization as an unrestricted free agent on August 25, 2010.
