POTSDAM, N.Y.- SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (1-2) picked up their first win of the season over Alfred State College (1-3) with a score of 54-44 during the first round of the Kevin Fee Roos Classic at SUNY Canton Friday night. Freshman guard Secret Clark (Bronx, N.Y./NYC Charter for A.E.C.I.) had a career-high 22 points to lead the Bears, while Hannah Carlson led the Saxons with 10 points and seven boards.

Potsdam jumped out to an 11-6 lead during the opening four minutes of the game with nine points coming from Clark. Freshman guard Breanne Sapp (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) knocked down back-to-back threes to add to Potsdam's lead. The Bears went on a 6-1 run that was capped by a jumper from senior forward Katie LaVoie (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy). Freshman guard Janay Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) hit a jumper to start the scoring in the second quarter. The teams followed with good offensive pressure before Potsdam started their 8-0 run that closed out the first half of play and extended their lead to 35-21.

Clark opened the third quarter with a made free throw, but the Saxons started to battle back. Kimberly Levee drained a three to start an 11-2 run. Carlson capped it with a 3-pointer at the 6:05 minute mark. Clark knocked down a three of her own to end the third to get their lead back to ten. Clark continued her scoring effort into the fourth with another made three to start an 8-2 run that was capped by a layup from junior guard Laura Coleman (Manhattan, N.Y./Opportunity Charter). The Saxons made another strong push, but fell short when the clock ticked to zero. Potsdam took the 54-44 victory.

Coleman finished with nine points, 12 rebounds and Clark tacked on eight boards and three steals. Sapp recorded eight points and 11 rebounds for the Bears. Potsdam shot 41-percent from behind the arch, while Alfred shot 16-percent.

Breana Gleaton was one point shy of a double-double with nine points and 10 boards and Levee tallied seven points and six rebounds.

The Bears are back in action tomorrow when they take on SUNY Canton at 2 p.m. in the second round of the invite.
