OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.—Freshman forward Chris Chiarella scored in the second overtime to complete the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team's 2-1 come-from-behind win at Old Westbury. Sophomore forward Eduardo Figueroa scored the game-tying goal with just five minutes left in regulation.

Old Westbury (0-4) jumped on Potsdam early in the first half as DJ Stock found Michael Mosher at the left post for a 1-0 Panther lead. The Bears were able to generate some offense as the half wore on. Potsdam put five shots on Old Westbury's Marcello Guardado, but couldn't solve the goalkeeper in the first 45 minutes.

The Bears continued to press in the second half, controlling the time of possession, but not creating too many chances. Finally at the 84:53 mark, sophomore forward Eduardo Figueroa was selected to take a penalty kick after freshman forward Tom Benedetto was brought down in the box. Guardado made the initial save, but Figueroa buried the rebound to tie the score.

In the first overtime, neither team could create much offense, but the Bears only needed one chance in the second overtime. Sophomore forward Alex Minsker made a great move around a Panther defender and fed Chiarella who tapped it home.

In goal, senior Jake Gyder finished with three saves to earn his second victory of the season. Guardado posted seven stops on the afternoon.

Potsdam Head Coach Adam Parker was pleased with the finish, but not with the start.

“We came out pretty flat,” said Parker. “When we woke up about 25 minutes into the game, we were battling both Old Westbury and a strong wind. But it's good to win an overtime game when everything isn't going your way. Ben Firlit and Sean Atkinson both played well. They were gritty and that's what we needed today. Hopefully the momentum will carry into tomorrow's game.”

The Bears (2-1) finish their Long Island swing with an 11 a.m. contest at Farmingdale State tomorrow morning.
